As AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry the question of ethical AI has become the part of the conversation. All AI models or engines adhere to the simple rule that has been part of the computer world since it's beginning, "Garbage in, Garbage out". Everything depends on what data is used to train the AI that will determine the quality and validity of its output. The question of Ethical vs Un-Ethical data used in the machine learning of the AI will effect how AI will be integrated into the music industry in the future. On one side are the ethical models—fairly trained on licensed music and data, can be part of an artist revenue stream much like royalties. On the other side of the spectrum are unethical AI companies—the ones that steal and scrape data to train their models, basically steal their intellectual data from artists without compensation . Needless to say this unethically trained generative AI will be extremely harmful to artists, and currently there is no legislation that protects the artist from AI use. For now it is up to companies and users to opt to use only AI models that are using ethical means to train their AI and fairly compensate the artists whose art is being used as that training data.
