Making a Scene Presents an Interview with YEV!
SLAVA UKRAINE
YEV’s self-titled debut album is a poignant and powerful introduction to the artist’s dynamic voice, blending cinematic folk rock, modern blues, vintage pop, and the soulful resonance of his Ukrainian heritage. Each song offers a captivating narrative that weaves haunting melodies and raw emotion into a tapestry of universal themes—hope, loss, resilience, and the search for belonging. YEV’s voice is best described as an amalgamation of Roy Orbison’s vintage vibrato, the blues folk stylings of Hozier, and Jeff Buckley’s soulful croon.
The album draws heavily from Yev’s own immigrant story, reflecting his navigation of cultural identity and the challenges of uprooting a life to start anew. Beyond the personal, it pays homage to the resilience of others, particularly Ukrainian refugees and war veterans whose stories inspired many of the songs. This dual focus on intimate reflection and broader cultural storytelling gives the album its cinematic, larger-than-life quality.
The audio production by Stephen Helvig (Helvig Productions, Minneapolis, MN) masterfully amplifies the emotional impact of Yev’s songwriting, incorporating cinematic strings, driving bass, bluesy guitar riffs, moody organs, and soaring vocal harmonies. These arrangements balance raw energy with moments of quiet introspection, inviting listeners into both the intimate and the epic. The visual half of this collaboration includes a world-class creative team, including legendary photographer Greg Gorman (Los Angeles, CA), who photographed the album art and the accompanying music videos produced by VJUS (Norway’s premiere video production company, Oslo, Norway).
In the tracks “Tempest Lullaby,” “Refugee,” and “Beze Mene,” Yev channels the quiet strength of those enduring unimaginable hardships. Songs like “Kozak’s Lament,” “Witness,” and “Hunger” draw from both history and modern conflicts, embodying themes of sacrifice and perseverance. “Last Prayer” is a uniquely hopeful tune that envisions a more unified future, and “Oi Chi To Kin” and “Motherless Child” bridge cultural and historical divides, reimagining public domain classics in a way that feels both timeless and contemporary.
YEV’s debut album is a statement—an emotional convergence of storytelling and cultural heritage. Yev sets the stage for a career that promises to bridge divides, inspire connection, and stir the soul.
