Global music has reached new levels. These four musicians, who call themselves Whispering Worlds, combine their instrumental talents with electronics to create experimental jazz. The group was formed back in 2022 to pay tribute to the late composer and trumpeter, Jon Hassell. Their first and introductory performance was at the Festival of New Trumpet Music in New York. During this concert, they featured original compositions by Aaron Shragge, their trumpeter and electronic expert.
Shragge has composed all the music for this album with the exception of a track called “Light Echoes” that the group composed as a unit, and “Serpentine Suspension” that’s an eleven- minute piece by the group closing this project as their final tune.
The quartet’s music sounds like a film soundtrack. It’s a comfortable listen, with Deric Dickens on drums, Damon Banks on bass, Luke Schwartz on guitar and electronics, and of course the composer, trumpeter Aaron Shragge. Their music together mirrors the group name of “Whispering Worlds.”
The productions are quite ethereal and other-worldly, incorporating the sampling of loops and melodic pieces including East Indian Raga music and the Japanese shakuhachi. The shakuhachi is a bamboo flute used in Zen Buddhism during meditation and is tuned to the minor pentatonic scale.
A residency at Avaloch Farm Music Institute, supported by a grant from Mass Cultural Council, allowed this quartet to further develop their repertoire. These newly composed pieces feed their debut album, “Cosmic Cliffs” that was released March 28, 2025.
