Vincenzo Virgillito, double bass/electric bass/fretless 5 and 4-string bass/composer.
It’s always a challenge to record and perform solo. There is no one standing in the spotlight except you. There is no other musician to support you. I applaud Vincenzo Virgillito for performing nearly a dozen songs, mostly original compositions, using only his composer and bass skills. Virgillito plays various bass instruments on this solo excursion.
He lets his music sweetly breathe, telling his stories by adding unusual sounds and colors pulled from his bass instruments like sweet taffy, along with his melodic messages. One of my favorite tunes was “Word Drops (Jaco’s midnight).” He is playing this original composition on electric bass. All the recording was done back in May of 2017 at the University of Hartfordshire, School of Creative Arts Studio 1, in Hartfield, England. This is an historic album.
The first tune was played on acoustic bass. It is called “Through Windows” and has a sunshine warm feeling to it. I enjoy his tone on the double bass and let the melody wash over me, like sunrays through a window glass. His tune “Reset” sounded angry and geared more towards rock music than jazz. He employs a lot of electronics in this arrangement.
Another favorite was his layered bass track called “Stars in the Mirror (my sons).” It’s a very pretty melody, with Virgillito over-dubbing various string effects over each other.
Vincenzo Virgillito is an exploratory bass musician and composer who has performed all over the world in various settings and bands including studio work, playing in European festivals, and using his diverse abilities to play blues, Afro-jazz, R&B, rock, ethno pop and even classical music. This is his first solo album.
