A typical Atlanta Blues Society meeting and jam: July 23 at Darwin’s in Marietta
Happy people were everywhere at Darwin’s in Marietta GA Saturday. They milled about on the front porch, hung out on the back deck, and packed into the club itself, laughing, hugging, and enjoying great music. What brought them all together? The monthly meeting of the Atlanta Blues Society , which takes place at various clubs in the Atlanta area every month. This time it was Darwin’s turn.
Every meeting has a host group This time it was Funky Bluester, a group out of Monroe, GA who put on a tremendous show. They did covers of Elmore James, Son Seals, and other blues greats and even an excellent version of “Folsom Prison.”
Darwin’s provided plenty of good food and drink. Lindsay Wine and the other servers kept everybody happy while the cooks provided delicious burgers and more.
What is the Atlanta Blues Society? It is a group of dedicated blues lovers who really enjoy each other’s company and many of whom are musicians so there are always jams whenever we get together. Basically it’s about 10 minutes of business and 3 hours of music, drinking, eating, and good company. Due to the dedication of the Board of Directors, the society has had tremendous growth over the past 3 years, adding members from all over Georgia and beyond. It engages in a variety of activities in support of the blues, including Blues in the Schools and raising funds for various musicians in need, with membership fees and donations from members and sponsors. This reporter is proud to be a sponsor, in fact.
This year, the society is hosting it first one-day outdoor music festival, The Georgia Blues Fest at Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre in Mableton. https://www.gabluesnroots.org (Editors Note: We are looking for Sponsors and Vendors for this great Event!)
Saturday was a great example of how much fun as meetings always are!
