It was 1998 when Roy Hargrove and his Grammy winning band rushed back into the studio. They had just won the Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Performance for their debut album called “Habana” and they wanted to capture that jubilation and excitement, like lightning in a bottle.
For years, this incredible studio session has been sitting on the shelf, musical dreams gathering dust. These tracks showcase a youthful Roy Hargrove and his red-hot style and energy. His band had a singular, infectious sound. This never-before-heard album will be released on October 18, 2024, just two days after what would have been Roy’s 55th birthday. He died in November of 2018 of cardiac arrest stemming from a longtime fight with kidney disease.
The first single release from this album is called “Priorities.” It reflects the high energy and musicality he and his band brought to jazz, stirring the cultural pot with South American and African rhythms. Roy Hargrove has been widely praised for both his composition skills and his abilities on trumpet and flugelhorn. Hargrove created a melting pot of music, when he smoothly combined bebop, Afro-Cuban rhythms and funk, blending them into the emerging Hip Hop and neo-soul culture. This is definitely a collector’s album worthy of airplay and appreciation. It showcases the artistry of Roy Hargrove, who left the jazz scene far too early. His music lives on!
