Review: The Breeze Kings at Subourbon Bar Jan 15
We ventured out Friday night to a new club in Kennesaw, Suboubon Grill, tohear one of our favorite groups, The Breeze Kings. It was a pleasant surprise to also get to hear about an hour of Roger “Hurricane Wilson’s set. We knew he was playing earlier in the evening, but since we could not arrive until after 7, we were pleased that he was still playing.
The Subourbon Bar, also known as the Subourbon social Club and Oyster Bar, is a venue for all sorts of good live music, from rock to blues to country. It is a fairly small club with a friendly staff and a menu that features a variety of oysters as well as shrimp,, large slices of pizza and a delicious Greek salad. There are, o course, may varieties of bourbon shots and beer and mixed drinks as well.
The place was packed on Saturday. Roger was more of a warm breeze than a hurricane this particular night, performing a laid-back and enjoyable set of singer-songwriter songs like an excellent version of “Montgomery in the Rain” and Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer” and spinning tales about his New Year’s Eve show at The Hank Williams Museum and his travels with Wilie “Big Eyes” Smith.
After Wilson finished his set, The Breeze kings took command ofhe performance space. They began with some great instrumental work and drumming from Jim Ransome on guitar, Trevor Roberts on drums and Gregg Shapiro on bass and then Carlos Capote slid in with his powerful voice and that amazing harmonica and they proceeded to entertain like the well-oiled blues machine that they are.
The band did original numbers like “Beehive” and covers like the amazing “Howlin’ for My Baby” and floored the audience, some of them had not had the pleasure of hearing them before, like the guy sitting next to us who proclaimed after the first vocal number, “That boy can sing!” he’s good!” Yes he can, and yes, they are good!.
Unfortunately, we were only able to stay for about an hour and a half, and had to lave after the first set, but both the club and The Breeze Kiings lived up to our high expectations. Roger Wilson was an extremely pleasant bonus. We understand he plays there every Tuesday and Friday in the early evening so we are fairly sure to see him there again. amd as always, we will see The Breeze Kings each and every opportunity we get. They are one of the very best groups in the Atlanta area, and indeed, anywhere.
