Back On Track
Pure Prairie League Records
“Back On Track” is Pure Prairie League’s first studio album in nearly two decades. The album takes their classic sound and gives it a fresh spin. Throughout a dozen cuts, we hear a rejuvenated band, both classic and contemporary at the same time. Today’s PPL features founding member John David Call on pedal steel, playing better than ever. The album was recorded at studios in both Madison and Hendersonville, Tennessee and produced by ex-member Michael Reilly. All but two songs are written by current band members, Jeffrey Zona, guitar and vocals; Jared Camic, bass and vocals; and vocalist Gary Burr, who sang with the band in the mid-80’s and late 90’s. Once again, an old friend Bill Brown, captured the spirit of their cowpoke/mascot “Sad Luke” for the cover. Those who remember the ’70s glory days of songs like “Amie”, “Two Lane Highway”, and “Let Me Love You Tonight” will be delighted at how much the band has preserved its style, of Country, Rock, Pop, and Rhythm and Blues. The vocals are shared by the members of the band.
“Back On Track” opens with “The Beginning” and the lyric “start from the beginning…I’ve never known a love that makes me feel free…you and me forever, wherever we go I know we’ll be together…I can’t wait to start from the beginning”. On “Picture Perfect Life”, “sometimes life get’s messy…I’m bringing all the music to the life, but the sun shines bright…it’s a picture perfect life”. “I Believe I Could Fall In Love With Loving You” is written by vocalist Burr. “Skippin Stones”, “I have a bad habit of shooting from the hip”.
On the modern “Crazy World”, PPL sings “sometimes I wonder how we will survive, we set it on fire just to watch it burn…in this crazy world, I tell you girl, I’m so thankful for you…in this crazy world I go crazy for you”. “Modern Problem” features Jeff “Birdman” Kirk on alto saxophone, “I got a modern problem and it’s because of you…I want to go back”. “A Love Like Yours”, “can never be mistaken”, with organ and piano from Randy Harper. “I’m The Lucky One”, “where it comes to love I got the best…I’m the lucky one…I know it’s me she’s thinking of…I’m the lucky one”.
“Love Song” is the first of two covers, written by Lesley Duncan the folk song was first recorded by her in 1971, “love is what we make it for no one can offer you more”. “Price Of Love” features Mat Britain on steel drums and percussion, “working for your love, every night and day…you can’t put a price on love”. “Six Feet Of Snow” was written by Lowell George and Keith Godchaux, and originally recorded by Little Feat in 1979, it’s a bit of a modern bluegrass sound with Jennifer Wrinkle on fiddle, “sweet New Orleans where my girl waits for me…if it weren’t for the weather…I’d be lying next to her tonight”. The closer “Back On Track” is a piece of southern rock, and a fist raising anthem that leaves the listener begging for more.
“Back On Track” flows like a freshwater river making it’s way through moss-covered rocks to its home in a cool clear lake. Released on December 6th, PPL has preserved it’s style for both new and old friends to enjoy.
