Southland Records
This is the debut album from the Southeast Louisiana Blues Band, The Pontchartrain Shakers, who first united in 2018. They feature Amedee A5 Frederick, (a 5th generation artist), and a guitarist with a three and a half octave vocal range; and Jojjo Wight, also a singer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, who played the French Quarter Festival for eighteen years. They are named for their “shaking” from shore to shore (from both sides of Lake Ponchartrain). Although most songs are written by either Amadee or Jojjo, the opener was written by them both. Rounding out the band are Luciano Leaes, keyboards; Red DeVecca, bass; and Earl Smith., drums. Both artists have played at venues up and down Bourbon Street including Tipitina’s, the House of Blues, Ruby’s Roadhoue, the Dew Drop Jazz Hall, and The Rosedale Blues Festival.
“Time To Make A Change” includes the lyric “gotta’ keep pushin’ on”. Amedee is a strong vocalist as he sings “Going Fishing”, “early in the morning”. On “I Need A Creole Woman” Amedee chimes “that knows how to cook good red beans and rice…and make it taste like New Orleans”, Leaes is on piano. “Miss You Baby” is a beautiful vocal from Jojjo “I love you and miss your blues” as they trade solos. The “A5 Boogie” reminds me of Canned Heat with a narrative from Amedee. “She Don’t Know” is a familiar progression reminding me of “Spoonful” and the lyric “what I did last night”.
“Dead Snake Blues” is another song sung by Jojjo as she chants “oh, Lord, have mercy”. “Louisiana 1927” is a cover of the Randy Newman classic and another beautiful vocal from Amedee “the streets of Evangeline…Louisiana gonna’ wash away”. The humorous “Cain Snake” sports the lyric “you better watch out…he slides through the tall grass…and he’ll bite you on your ass”. On the closer Jojjo sings “we need love, love, love in our hearts…brothers and sisters better keep on giving, we need love, love, love in our souls”.
The Pontchartrain Shakers, Amedee and Jojjo, are ambassadors of the Blues on this fine debut album.
