Paul Kendall VINTAGE BARITONE FESTIVE
PAUL KENDALL
VINTAGE BARITONE FESTIVE
Independent Label
Paul Kendall, baritone saxophone; George Grund, piano/organ.
For those who enjoy the baritone saxophone, this holiday album will bring you great pleasure. Paul Kendall is an amazing baritone sax player. He joins forces with pianist George Grund to record an awesome album of beautifully played Christmas songs that we know and love. They begin with “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” offered as a lovely jazz ballad.
“The 1949 Buescher Big B Baritone saxophone on this record was my first online purchase of a vintage saxophone. I bought it in unplayable condition without a neck and the body bent with a detached main brace. In fact, a repairman declined to work on it. I decided to learn how to repair watching online videos, and I did all the repairs myself. I later purchased a 1967 Conn 12M Beri in similar condition and repaired that myself also. I used that instrument on this recording as well as on ‘We Three Kings’ and ‘God Rest Ye Mery Gentlemen.’ I hope you can hear the difference in sound in these two vintage baritone saxophones on this record,” Paul Kendall shares.
Now, I see where Kendall got the title for this album. He is not only celebrating the holiday season, but Paul Kendall is also celebrating his vintage horns.
It is always joyful to hear a baritone saxophone played as the lead instrument. Especially in this case, where Kendall has repaired and restored supposedly unrepairable horns, renewing their value and appreciation. George Grund’s pianos solo on “Angels We Have Heard on High” is played at a slow swing pace. Grund adds the sparkle to this project as a competent accompanist and soloist, playing both piano and organ during this production.
Their duet album is simplistic, but full of beauty, spotlighting the entertaining talent of two dynamic musicians.
