Mike Dangeroux has long been recognized for his contributions to the Chicago blues scene, sharing the stage with notables Koko Taylor, Mississippi Heat, J.W. Williams, Nellie Tiger Travis, and Buddy Guy. Previous recordings include “Crosstown Blues” and “It’s About Time,” the latter with Mississippi Heat’s Inetta Visor and keyboardist Vince Varco.
With “Empty Chair,” Mike continues to push the boundaries while delving deep into the heart of the blues. Recorded at the Maplewood Studios in Chicago, all of the songs are written by Mike. Building on his unique sound, he blends traditional influences with modern storytelling, rich instrumentation on guitar and bass, and his own powerful vocals. He is accompanied by co-producer Varco on piano and organ and Daron Casper Walker on drums.
The opening track “End Like This” features Mike as he sings, “You walked away, girl. How could it be that it ends like this… I still reminisce, how could it end like this”? “Money Back” features the lyric “woke up this morning, sun was shining bright…don’t need your sympathy…I just want my money back.”. On “Play My Cards Right,” Mike chimes, “I take my time, can’t play it safe, not done yet, play my cards right, with a little pain and a lot of pride, I’m gonna’ rise above and play my cards right.”.
“No Good For Me” includes Mike as he chants, “You say you care, but I can see that your no good, no good for me.”. On “Empty Chair,” the title track, Mike croons, “Coffee’s cold, sugar’s gone, another tear, another sigh, empty chair, love that used to be.”. On the closer “What’s Taking So Long,” we again hear Mike’s articulate voice: “I’ve been waiting on the sunset, but the sky’s holding’ back till dawn…every street looks so familiar, but clarity has a way of hiding.”.
Mike states, “This EP is a reflection of my journey, musically and personally. The blues has always been about storytelling, and I wanted to bring my own stories to life in a way that connects with people on a deep level.”. Mike does exactly that on “Empty Chair.”.
