Vocalist Melinda Rose and pianist Frenchy Romero have developed a strong friendship and great musical collaboration over ten years of performing duo concerts. This is their debut album. It features Romero’s brilliance on the piano. She has her own style, but it never gets in the way when she is accompanying Melinda Rose’s smooth vocals. Melinda sings “Once Upon a Summertime” in Spanish, although it was originally composed in French. This song highlights both of their heritage as Hispanic.
Melinda Rose has a sincere, emotional delivery. You hear it clearly on Stevie Wonder’s wonderful composition “If It’s Magic” and Irving Berlin’s song that Nina Simone made so famous, “You Can Have Him.” These two women have special chemistry and keep you thoroughly entertained with both Romero’s incredible technique on piano and Rose, with her lyrical interpretation of the stories and lovely singing of these memorable melodic standards.
On “It Could Happen to You” Frenchy Romero sparkles on the piano during an up-tempo pace rich in technique, and Melinda Rose shows off her scat skills. It’s just the two of them and they are in perfect sync. Romero walks her left hand like a double bass player and solos wildly with her right hand in the treble clef. Rose has composed three songs for this album. “Don’t Come Back” is a slow shuffle blues, where they invite trumpeter, Summer Camargo to add horn talents to their mix. They also add bassist Vince Dupont who opens this original with only bass and voice. Frenchy Romero puts the smokin’ hot grit into their arrangement, with her bluesy piano at the core, egged on by Matt Wilson’s drums. Another impressive song she’s written is “I’ll Do it All Again,” a beautiful ballad with pretty changes and memorable lyrics. Her final original composition “It’s Not You, It’s Me” is a swinger that closes their album.
Both of these ladies are masters of their craft and united they are double trouble. If Melinda Rose or Frenchy Romero are playing anywhere near you, rush to the club or concert.
