Mike Mckenna and Jay Moonah are a Canadian Blues duo. They are also restauranteurs owning The Catnip Cheeseburger Shack, where cheeseburgers are served while cats roam about the dining area. Perhaps a take off on the New Orleans’ hotel where ducks wander about. Mckenna plays lead, rhythm and slide guitar; while vocalist Jay Moonah plays harmonica, rhythm guitar, keyboards, bass and percussion. The new album “Breaking News” is produced by Jay Moonah and Jeff Jones, and recorded, mixed amd mastered by Jones.
Opening with the title track, Moonah plays harmonica and sings “Breaking News’, your heart is in a whirl, breaking news you found another girl…breaking news you found another man, breaking news your head is in the sand…it’s just the blues, that’s all you get from breaking news”. On, “Thursday Night Boogie” Moonah chants the lyric “I know you can’t see far away, Thursday night boogie…free flight Blues day…come on baby dance with me…I know you got so much on your mind …come on baby, dance with me”.
On “Adria”, Moonah chimes “Every night…when nothings around…never seems the same”. McKenna plays some slide on a resonator guitar, while vocalist Moonah adds more harmonica as he croons “Scarborough Blues” wears out my shoes, I get to choose when I get the Scarborough blues”.
Individually Mike McKenna and Jay Moonah are both Maple Blues Award nominees. When together they exceed all expectations. This too short EP will leave you begging for more.
