MARIA SCHAFER
HERE FOR YOU
Marsch Music
Maria Schafer, vocals/ composer/ arranger; Zack Caplinger, Guitar; Jeremy Siskind, Piano; Karo Galadjian, Drums; David Reynoso, Bass; Brad Black, additional arranging on Where Is Love (Waltz).
Maria Schafer opens this album with a composition by trumpeter, Tommy Turrentine. She has written the lyrics to this swinging little tune titled, “You Said It.” Guitarist Zack Caplinger takes a happy-go-lucky improvised solo, followed by Jeremy Siskind who adds his creative piano playing to the mix. This is a great song to begin Schafer’s lates album called “Here For You.”
The Los Angeles based singer/songwriter has released three albums on the Marsch Music label. Her first album was titled “To Know Love” and released in 2017. In 2019, she recorded and released “No Broken Hearts,” followed by a holiday album, “Christmas in the City.”
On her current release, (the 4th album) Schafer shares several songs that she has composed, obviously continuing up a very jazzy path. She explores the rhumba rhythms on (“A Chance to make You Mine) and then swings on her original song called, “Release Me.” Another song she has written both music and lyrics for is a waltz titled, “Where is Love?” It has a lovely melody. It’s nice to hear her music orchestrated by an octet during a live performance at the Norris Pavilion, in Palos Verdes, CA.
Schafer’s tone and style are perfect to tackle the old standard “More Than You Know” as a sultry ballad. What’s missing is the ‘two and four’ beat slapping the jazz groove into place by the drummer.
Here is a young, talented vocalist who also composes her own music. I expect big things from Maria Schafer in the future.
