Kelly’s Lot The Blues Remind Me
Kelly’s Lot
The Blues Remind Me
PK Entertainment
While this is only their third Blues Collection, they previously had a spattering of blues on all of their previous sixteen releases. Kelly’s Lot has played strictly blues since the first night they hit the stage at the Roxy in Hollywood. “The Blues Remind Me” is a follow-up to 2021’s live album “Where And When”. All of the songs were written by Kelly Zirbes and guitarist Perry Robertson. In 2023/2024 Kelly’s Lot played all over Southern California, Texas, France and Croatia.
Kelly’s Lot opens the album with the title track, as the song answers the question “what does the blues remind me”, with background harmony from Mo Beeks, and Art Menoza on drums. On Boogie Bus, Kelly sings “Get on board, get on board, get on board, on board, even when you’re feeling down you can hear that boogie sound”, featured are guitarist Robertson, Frank “Cisco” Hinojosa harmonica, and the strong rhythm section of Matt McFadden, bass; and Mike Sauer, drums. “Mama’s Blues” captures Paulie Cerra, tenor and alto saxophones; Aviva Maloney, alto sax; Didier Reyes, trumpet; and Chip Tingle, trombone.
Kelly’s Lot “It Ain’t Always” includes the lyric “what you say, it ain’t always what you do…that makes me want to sing”. “Man in the Moon”, “I thought that man in the moon was you”, featuring Gary Bivona, Flugelhorn; and a short sax solo from Johnston. On “Without You” Kelly declares “I seek my freedom without you”. “Just Tell Me The Truth” features some more great horns with Aviva on flute, and Rob Zucca on electric guitar, “when you want to sing the blues, can we all come together, can we all get along”.
Kelly’s Lot “Blessings” includes Mo Beeks on the Hammond organ, “I can hurt you so bad, that it’s good”. “Aces”, “counting all the Aces”, features harp ace Tomislav Goluban; McFadden, bass; and Sauer, drums. “Love and Understanding”, “hey babe, won’t you let me in, without love & understanding we’ll never win…hey darling, won’t you give it a chance, without love and understanding this will never last”.
Kelly’s Lot will travel this year to play the Howth Roots and Blues Festival in Ireland and also return to Croatia for a few shows including the Jerry Ricks Blues Festival. Watch for their return to the states soon. Kelly’s Lot is full of fun and affection.
