Katie Martin Hope
Katie Martin has a new album called Hope, and hope is the thread that binds her powerful songs together. Martin says that she writes from her life, about things that she has overcome, to let other people know they can overcome as well
Martin’s music is unique in the way she uses looping and layering to allow her to create these beautiful, complex masterpieces on which she played every note and sings intricate harmonies. As she did with her first album, Purpose, she worked with Larry Mitchell at his Chocolate Room Studios in Opelika, Alabama. As always, she played acoustic guitar with her distinctive fret tapping style and uses various parts of it for percussion. On the title song “Hope”, she also plays a haunting Native American flute.
It isn’t necessary to analyze every song. They are all that Martin says they are in the beautifully illustrated booklet. ( She did the art, as well.) On the first page, she proclaims” A call to rise. A call to awake. A call to feel alive.”
In “The Call #2: Let The Storm Rage On“ Katie gives her spoken declaration, “I choose hope. I choose respect. I choose love. I choose faith in mankind…” What bold and powerful words in these times of unrest and distrust!
One other example of the positive and important message of this amazing album is in the title song. Here she tells us, “When there’s no going back/and there is no room to stay/just keep moving on/and find a way.”
Choose hope. Choose Respect. Choose love. Find a way. Katie Martin is truly an old soul to have such a message and to use blues and soul with modern technology to weave something so special.
If you like music that uplifts and strengthens and makes you feel good, get Hope. And don’t fail to enjoy the beautiful packaging with Martin’s marvelous art!
