Katriva Riggins was born in Miami on February 7th, 1980. She was raised in a home where music was played. Thanks to her parents eclectic tastes Kat fell in love with everything from gospel to soul, country and rock. It was however blues and jazz legends Koko Taylor, Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Sam Cooke and Janis Joplin that really captivated her. At the age of 23, Kat sang her first gig of blues and jazz standards in a cozy lounge in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, backed by just a piano player. Her first recorded effort was an EP entitled Seoul Music followed by her full-length debut album Lily Rose on the Tate Music label in 2014. As a follow-up in 2016 Kat self-released “Blues Revival”, and in 2018 “In The Boys’ Club” (with special guest guitarists Albert Castglia, and Josh Rowand), both of these albums on the Bluzpik Media label. In 2020, Kat was signed by Mike Zito’s Gulf Coast Records and released “Cry Out” which earned Kat her first Blues Music Award nomination, and also snagged two Independent Blues Awards. Her 2022 follow-up “Progeny” received another BMA nomination. “Revival” is Kat’s sixth album overall.
All songs were written by Kat and Tim Mulberry. On the opener “Lucky” Kat chimes “I know just what I like, I like to wheel and whine, and bump and grind, and get down tonight”. Mulberry plays both bass and drums throughout the recording. “Revived” carries a message of R n’B renewal with some funky organ and hornlines also supplied by Mulberry. “Look at my new walk, I’m stepping high, I got a real good feeling inside, feeling revived”.
“Southern Soul”, “ain’t nothing like a southern soul, Blues all in my toes, rockin’ roll folk singing”. “New Level”, “I got a new attitude to match my dreams, I’m on a whole new level, and it’s plain to see, I got to be me”. “Set Me Free” is a plea as Kat belts out “Like singing the blues without feeling, now why oh why keep trying, my patience is dying, just set me free”. On my favorite “Mojo Thief” Kat croons “Everybody’s got a mojo, you just gotta let yours work, but don’t you be, no mojo thief”.
On “Chasing Time” Kat takes a fiery vocal as she beatifully sings “I can’t rush into tomorrow, or get back yesterday, but I keep chasing time”. “Mighty”, let the meek take the earth, the universe, is for the mighty”. “Old Time Way”, is a hard-rocking reminder of the good old days “nowadays the music plays, but the feeling ain’t the same, as the good old days, I wanna go back”.
On the closer and another favorite, “Healer” Kat sings, “maybe I can bring somebody peace, maybe make somebody feel loved, if I just provoke a little hope in this world, it’ll spread left, right, below and above”.
Backed by an extraordinary group of musicians this album will “get your mojo workin'”. With ten high energy originals, you will be moved. Kat creates an intimacy that makes this “Revival” a memorable experience.
