In a review I wrote for an appearance by JP Blues at Darwin’s in late 2013, I said:

“It’s a cliche’ to speak of musicians making a guitar “sing” or “wail”, but JP does that, and he makes it make a lot of other sounds you would not think six strings could make. In fact, he is the sort of musician who becomes so at one with the music and the instrument that you almost wonder who is playing who. It’s almost as though he was possessed, or that he and the guitar meld into something more than either one of them.”

I could say the same thing again about the latest CD, Make Room at the Table. Surrounding himself with different great backup musicians on various tracks,such as Yonrico Scott and Shiloh Bloodworth on drums and Todd Smallie, Jonathan Norwood,,John Ypung and Tony Hossri on bass, JP keeps the guitar and lapsteel for hinself and they stand out on every track.

The driving first song, “Keep on Walking,” also benefits from the soulful background vocals of producer Richard L’Hommedieu.

For an example of the melding of man and instrument, take a listen to the amazing lapsteel on “Old Man Joe.” Other songs that really show off JP’s playing are “Move Aside” and “Holy Roller.” “Trouble on Heels” shows off both that great slide guitar and the man’s ability to play bass as well.

JP’s voice is made for blues and the vocals are excellent on all songs. Vocal standouts, though, are ‘Another Time, Another Place” and my favorite track on the CD, the radical remake of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.” Here, JP slows down the tempo and ups the emotion in the Animals’ classic, and turns it into a completely different song.

Just to prove he can be versatile, JP ends this CD with “We Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” which features a rap by RoSe LaFt and “Day by Day, which is a straight-up rocker.

This is a very strong CD by this former New York artist who is now based here in Atlanta. It should please present fans and find a lot of new ones!
