Jeff Jensen Live – “The River City Sessions”
I believe that Jeff Jensen, Bill Ruffino, and Robinson Bridgeforth are the most exciting group to hear or see live on the contemporary blues scene. Having had the pleasure of seeing them a number of times, I can assert that this CD does a great job of capturing the sheer exuberance of Jensen live, although, of course, you miss the visual of Jeff’s hair flying everywhere, and that big grin of his, but you can look at the photo on the front, close your eyes and imagine that part. The CD was recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, TN in front of an enthusiastic audience of devoted fans who came from 8 states to be part of the event.
There’s plenty of guitar wizardry, of course, and Jeff’s passionate, powerful vocals. All of the songs are originals, except for the delightful opening, T-Bone Shuffle,” and the electrifying ending, “All Along the Watchtower.”
In fact, “electrifying” is a great adjective for this entire album. “Make It Through” and “Empty Bottles” catch the indefatigable energy and sense of humor that Jensen brings to every performance. The instrumental “J.J. Boogie” lets all three musicians show off and “Find Myself Alone” ‘showcases Jeff’s jaw-dropping guitar skills.
.All of the songs display the musical excellence and sheer joy this band exudes. Everything works together so smoothly. Every song is a delight, but “Heart Attack & Vine” and the riveting, haunting “Ash and Bone” are perhaps the masterpieces. or at least at this writing. Next listen, it may be two other songs. This is the next best thing to seeing Jeff and his band live for yourself! Expect to enjoy it for a long time.
