Jacopo Ferrazza, double bass/synthesizers/composer; Enrico Zanisi, piano/synthesizers/ electronics; Allessandra Diodati, vocals; Valerio Vantaggio, drums/synthesizers; Livia De Romanis, cello.
A short Prologue opens Jacopo Ferrazza’s album, with a splash of choir voices and synthesized music to tease my attention. Then comes an original composition called “The Cave.” Enrico Zanisi sets the mood using a deeply pedaled piano. Alessandra Diodati’s voice enters sweetly, harmonizing with the piano notes, until Valerio Vantaggio crashes onto the scene with his explosive drums. This listener is lifted up, until Livia De Romanis enters on cello. Then, the music calms. Let’s me down gently. This original song is a mix of genre’s including jazz, rock, classical and chamber music rolled into a tight ball of experimental soundscape. It’s quite compelling and entertaining, with the arrangement changing gears all the time.
In Greek mythology, Prometheus is a god of fire and best remembered for defying the Olympian gods by snatching fire from them and giving it to humanity in the form of technology, knowledge, and helping to grow civilization. Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods, is said to have condemned Prometheus to eternal torment for this debauchery.
This title tune begins with only the tinkle of piano notes. Diodati’s voice enters, like a tremble in the wind. The synthesizers take over with the cello singing in the background, representing the ‘fire’ aspect of this musical story. On the “Pillory” composition, the award-winning Ferrazza is spotlighted on his bass during a long and lovely solo.
Jacopo Ferrazza has released four albums as a leader, two for CAM jazz label, a double bass solo album, also with this 5tet group, an album called “Fantasia” in 2022. This new “Prometheus” release will become available on January 24, 2025.
This 5tet album was recorded in Italy and features Italian musicians. The album is meant to be an intentional screenplay, where each instrument represents a role in the telling of the Prometheus saga. Certainly, the arrangements and compositions created by Jacopo Ferrazza exhibit his wonderful creativity and imagination. His 5tet ensemble features outstanding musicianship and dedication to interpreting Ferrazza’s original compositions. This album is musical art.
