When three different types of people meet to make music together, only something special can come out of it. And that is with Hybrid Spirits clearly evident.
Scattered across England, they don’t meet very often but send their files back and forth and work on their ideas and songs.
The first album “Astral Whispers” was released in 2018 followed by the EP “Fear” the following year and in 2020 the charity single “Rain or Shine” was released, the proceeds of which went to the red cross for their emergency Covid 19 appeal. In the same year the EP “Mirage” was released and now they have released the new EP in September “The Forgotten”
Influences from big names like Depeche Mode, Numan or The Cure cannot be ignored, which in no way means that the band is copying anyone. The songs are their work and the influences are just a decorative addition to the really outstanding songs, which can be described as poetical, spiritual and no topic is left out.
“The Forgotten”, first song of the EP and a lead story with strong lyrics that clearly shows the direction in which this album is going.
“They are the tainted, the loveless, the forgotten They are the restless unwanted bleeding souls”
“Blind Faith” takes a critical look at the meaning of God and is one of my favorites. The spoken words at the beginning of the song are emphatically formulated and do not suggest that this is followed by a very melodic part, again interrupted by forceful words, simply an ingenious mix on a topic that has probably preoccupied every one of us.
“Save Me” tells of being trapped in a love that cannot be fulfilled and of the feeling of not being able to free yourself from this trap. Again, outstanding lyrics and you can almost feel the pain and despair, poetic and dark and haunting. With over eight minutes the longest song on the EP and one of the most impressive.
“Soul Diseased”, also a song that tells of desperation, the desperation of not being able to cope with life. Even the melody sounds like desperation and gets under your skin.
“The End Of Everything”, last song and although it has a rather light melody it is about missed opportunities not to have changed even though you had the opportunity to do so.
The EP “The Forgotten” is not easy light music, rather it makes you think and I think that really each of us can find ourselves in one of the songs. Spiritual, haunting, a successful mixture of the favorite genres of the three musicians, who go from rock to pop to classical and new wave, it’s the real deal for people who also like to be demanding in music.
