“The Real You” is the fourth studio recording from Greg Nagy. Nagy is the former lead guitarist for the blues and soul band “Root Doctor”. Their 2008 recording “Change Our Ways” received a Blues Music Award nomination as Best Soul Blues Album. In 2009 Nagy released his debut album “Walk That Fine Thin Line” and he received his own nomination as Best New Artist. Nagy’s follow up recordings include 2011’s “Fell Toward None”; and 2015’s “Stranded” which received four stars from Downbeat Magazine, and high praise from Soul Bag, Vintage Guitar, and Blues in Britain. This new album “The Real You” was released on October 1st, 2024.
“The Real You” was produced by Josh Ford & Greg Nagy while the Executive Producer is Mick Kolassa; the album was recorded and mixed at the Sound Shop Studios in Macomb, Michigan; string arrangements are by Richard Curran. Included are five new originals and six covers. “The Real You” opens with the title track as Nagy beautifully sings “when you’re walkin’ down the street in the light of day…when you try to hide a broken heart it’s ok…I want to know the real you, I know its been a long time that you relied on somebody new…I want to know the real you”, with Jim Alfredson and Dave Grisa on organ; Keith Kaminski, saxophone; Nagy, guitar; John Barron, bass; Todd Glass, drums; and backing vocalist Lynne Calloway. “Mississippi Brown” a.k.a. Willie Brown is a traditional song first recorded in the early 1930’s; “I’ve been looking for my baby, don’t know where she can be found”, with Ray Goodman on dobro; and Peter Madcat on harmonica. “Crazy” was written by Green, Mouse, Reverberi and Reverberi in 1975, with more guitar and another great vocal from Nagy, “baby, I’m crazy, baby you’re crazy, baby we’re crazy”.
“Never Mine” is another new original from Nagy with Larry McCray on guitar. “Come To Poppa” is a cover, written in 1976 by Earl Randall & Willie Mitchell (of Hi Records); “if you like what I say, then you know it’s o.k. just come to Poppa”. 2009’s “Something” is a great version of the George Harrison classic, performed as a duet with Thornetta Davis; “there’s something in the way she moves”. “Cornell Ala King” is an instrumental; again with Kaminski on sax, and Walter White added on bass.
“Baby, What Took Your Love From Me” a.k.a. “When You Took Your Love From Me” was sung by O.V. Wright in 1972; “you could be my love, you could be my wife…what took your love from me”, with more guitar, and another great vocal from Nagy. “Where Do We” asks the question “where do we go from here?; and was written by Bobby Womack and Jim Ford and first recorded in 1993. “All I Need (Is You), is co-written by Nagy with the late Steve Frarey “all those other things I could live without, I know that its true, all I really need is you”. The closer is “The Joke” written by Brandi Carlile, Dave Cobb, Phil Hanseroth, and Tim Hanseroth, first recorded in 2018; it’s another beautiful vocal from Nagy as he sings, “I’ve been to the movies, to see how it ends”.
Greg Nagy’s beautifully soulful voice helps turn pain into promise. Duke Robillard calls “The Real You” an R&B classic! Nagy has been touring with the Larry McCray Band and also performs his own shows. This album is highly recommended, and will cure whatever ails you.
