Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey’s Interview with Vulvarine
Vulvarine, an unapologetic rock gang hailing from Vienna, Austria, is redefining the landscape of modern rock music with their powerful and dynamic sound. Describing themselves as purveyors of ‘Vulvarock,’ a genre that fuses raw punk, heavy metal, and high-energy rock ‘n’ roll, the band creates a sonic experience that is as energetic and dramatic as it is empowering.
At the core of Vulvarine’s music lies a fierce commitment to breaking boundaries, with lyrics that tell stories of life’s complexities—from wild parties and intoxication to power struggles, harassment, and everything in between. Their songs dive into the murky shades of human existence, exploring themes like love, myth, magic, power, and powerlessness. Yet, despite tackling serious issues, Vulvarine never loses their sense of fun, maintaining an energetic and rebellious spirit that invites listeners to both reflect and rock out.
Empowering Women in Rock: A Feminist Revolution in Music
Vulvarine’s mission goes beyond music. Driven by a passion for raising the visibility of FLINTA* (feminine, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans, and agender) voices in rock, the band stands firmly at the intersection of art and activism. They position themselves as anchors of a distinct feminist presence within the rock scene, fueled by a strong desire to empower women and inspire them to unleash their full artistic potential. The band’s message, influenced heavily by the Riot Grrrl movement, is clear and unyielding: “Grab your guitar and make some noise, girl!”
This ethos drives not only their music but also their interactions with audiences, especially women, encouraging them to take up space in a traditionally male-dominated genre and claim their power as artists and individuals. Vulvarine’s feminism isn’t just a talking point—it’s woven into the very fabric of their identity as a band.
From ‘Unleashed’ to ‘Fast Lane’: A Journey of Triumph and Dedication
In 2020, Vulvarine introduced themselves to the world with their debut album Unleashed, released through Electric Fire Records. The album quickly became a rallying cry for fans who sought a raw and unapologetic sound that rejected the polished, corporate rock world in favor of something far more authentic and visceral.
Their EP Witches Brew followed in October 2023, marking another chapter in their ever-growing story. Since then, the band has continued to gain momentum, touring with notable acts like Thundermother (SWE), The Baboon Show (SWE), Exciter (CAN), and The Bar Stool Preachers (UK). These high-energy performances have solidified their reputation as an electrifying live act with a powerful message.
Looking ahead, 2025 promises even bigger things for Vulvarine. Their much-anticipated full-length album, Fast Lane, is set to be released on March 28, 2025, via Napalm Records. The album promises to deliver more of the fierce, empowering rock anthems that the band is known for, cementing their place as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking bands in the rock scene today.
A Glimpse Into the Future
As Vulvarine continues to shake up the rock world, their mission to amplify women’s voices in music and provide a platform for authentic self-expression remains at the forefront. Whether they’re shredding guitar riffs or speaking out against social injustices, Vulvarine is unapologetically challenging the status quo and encouraging everyone—especially women—to join them in their musical revolution.
With their feminist values, electrifying performances, and the release of their upcoming album Fast Lane, Vulvarine is a band that continues to inspire, empower, and push the boundaries of what rock music can represent.
So, to all the aspiring musicians out there: Grab your guitar and make some noise. Vulvarine’s rocking the world, and it’s time you did too.
