The Georgia Blues and Roots Festival 2017!
Website – Facebook Page – Facebook Event
On Sept 30 2017 the Atlanta Blues Society will present it 2nd “Georgia Blues and Roots Festival“. The festival was designed not only as an event to showcase currently touring artists writing and performing blues rooted music, but also as a fund raiser for the Atlanta Blues Societies Blues in the Schools Program.
In 2017 the Atlanta Blues Society has had over 20 requests for it’s Blues in the Schools program from just the metro Atlanta area schools. This does not take into account the schools in the outlying suburbs of the city. The cost of presenting this program under the current demand is well over $6,000 which unfortunately is not within the Blues Societies Budget. In order to help create a funding stream and awareness of the program the Atlanta Blues Society created the Georgia Blues and Roots Festival as an Educational and musical event.
This year, as an educational component to the festival, the ABS has arranged for a separate stage which will present several programs designed to educate and engage people with Blues and it’s history. They have arranged for the Atlanta Blues Dancer’s (https://www.bluesdanceatl.org/ and https://www.bluesdanceatl.org/blues-dance-classes-atlanta/ ) to give a free “Blues Dancing Lesson” as well as the Atlanta Cajun Zydeco Association who will present lessons on Zydeco Dancing. For those dancers and those who are just learning, there will be an area set aside just for you to get your dance on! There will also be a Harmonica Workshop (kids will get a free Hohner harmonica while supplies last) and a presentation of our “Blues in the Schools” program at the event.
This year the line up is extremely strong. Starting off the day will be Rae and the Royal Peacocks who represented Atlanta Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis Last Year. Immediately Following them will be IBC Winner and International touring Blues Artist Little G Weevil! Playing along with Little G Weevil will be the legendary Pianist and singer Eddie Tigner and his daughter, Blues singer “Sandra Hall“. As a way to honor Eddie Tigner and Sandra Hall for their lifetime of dedication to the Blues in Georgia, both of them will receive the “Georgia Music Legend Award” at the festival. In addition To showcase a young interpretation of the blues they have brought in the widely successful band “The Broadcast” from North Carolina into the show. All of this comes to a head with Georgia’s Own “Tinsley Ellis” performing right before their headlining act this year, The Legendary “Bernard Allison” which promises to be nothing short of an explosive end to the evening. If you are not familiar with Bernard, he is the son of the legendary “Luther Allison”, in addition to his own long successful music career. We cannot find anyone who remembers Bernard Allison ever performing in Georgia, so this is a Rare once in a lifetime performance you won’t want to miss!!
