“Forq” is a group of improvisers and groove players who bring funk and fusion to the studio on their “Big Party” album.  Using a variety of musicians on different sessions, they still manage to capture the band’s commitment to making rhythm-driven party music.  The composer and keyboardist in the group is Henry Hey. He sometimes collaborates with other members to write these original compositions.  ‘Hey’ is known for his work with David Bowie and he describes this album as a late-night musical journey through eclectic influences.  He is also the writer or co-writer of every song this group has recorded.

They open with “Into Bright.” This tune sets the mood for the songs to follow with its boisterous, brilliant funk and driving drum line. Track #2 titled, “Bomp,” leans heavily towards a Reggae groove with an island/fusion, electronic arrangement. Group members have written this tune with Henry Hey, including James Genus with Kevin Scott as co-writers. Parts of this tune are infused with soft rock wrapped into the arrangements and unexpected tempo changes.

“Big 3” is a blues number featuring Ryan Scott on guitar and some fiery improvisation by Henry Hey on keyboard. About three quarters of the way through this tune, the band adds a soft rock groove to their presentation.

A composition called “The Grotto” slows the groove down to a smooth jazz ballad, but the tune is still energetic.  “Kick the Curb” is a composition that sounds rooted in R&B with wild syncopation. Rick Scott has co-composed this one with ‘Hey.’ He’s impressive on his guitar solo.  The drums of Josh Dion are on fire!

Eli Menezes lays down a strong bass line on a tune called “Song for Jim.” Once again, Henry Hey employs syncopation to exploit the funk in his original composition. The Forq ensemble really knows how to lay-down a tenacious groove. On their closing tune they feature Lucy Woodward on vocals. The attached gives you a sample of Ms. Woodward’s vocals as she performs a duet with Henry Hey.

If you have appreciation for rock bands and funky jazz, this album has just the flavors for your tastebuds.  These musicians are expert improvisers and bring something fresh and innovative to each tune.  For sure, this is “Big Party” music.
