Emma Wilson was the “Emerging Blues Artist of The Year” at the UK Blues Awards in 2022. As a result Wilson returned to Memphis to record this new album. Emmy Award winning Producer Scott Bomar brought in legendary Memphian musicians including organist Charles Hodges, bassist Leroy Hodges, and Booker T. and the MGs drummer Steve Potts. From Steve Bomar’s Bo Keys came the horn section of Marc Franklin, trumpet; and Kirk Smothers, saxophones. Wilson’s co-writers include Nashville Award winning songwriter Gary Burr; and British singer songwriter Terry Reid.
Included are two song’s Wilson co-wrote with Burr; and one co-written with Reid. Also included were song’s steeped in the Stax style. “Water” was recorded in 1969 combining the talents of Steve Cropper, Albert King and Pop Staples. “I Still Love You” written by Willie Mitchell was first recorded by Al Green in 1972. “What Kind of Love” was originally recorded by Don Bryant in 2017. “Since I Fell For You”, written by Buddy Johnson, was waxed by Dinah Washington in the late 1940’s. “Hoochie Coochie Mama” is an adaptation on Hoochie Coochie Man and features wicked solos from guitarist Joe Restivo and organist Charles Hodges.
Wilson displays her notable vocals in an album that should garner her further recognition. This album should be heard by everyone who loves that soulful Stax sound.
