All The Not-So-Gentle Reminders
Blue Corn Music
This is David Ramirez’s sixth studio album on Blue Corn Music. His last album was 2021’s “Backslider” on Sweetworld Music. All of the songs were written or co-written in Waverly, Alabama. “All The Not So Gentle Reminders” was co-produced with Christopher Boosahda and recorded at Spectra Studios in Cedar Park, Texas.
The album opens with “Maybe It Was All A Dream,” an ambient instrumental played by guitarist Ramirez. On “Waiting On The Dust To Settle,” we get to hear his stunning voice as he sings, “I discovered the days, the madness, always looking over my shoulder…amen, I see you in the distance of a new beginning…waiting on the light at the end of the tunnel.”. “Music Man” is autobiographical as Ramirez chants, “Take a look at me now…take a look at the crowd.”. “Dirty Martini” is a narrative with a great guitar solo.
“I Got People” reminds me of a Randy Newman song as Ramirez chimes, “I got people, I need you, come on over…I want you… I got people, yes I do, but I don’t have you. I got one thing on my mind: look you in the eye. Now baby, come on over. I got people”. “Twin Sized Beds” features a horn arrangement by Jeff Dazey and the lyric “just a couple of twin sized beds pushed together to make a full sized bed,” with some lilting piano.
“Deja Voodoo” includes Ramirez’s beautiful voice as he sings, “Do I know you, do you know me?”. “A Bigger World” follows. On “Holiday (Crush),” Ramirez croons, “Looks like you could use a holiday, sounds like you could get away, I can set you free from this day to day, crush you, crush you, come step into my sunshine.”.
“Nobody Meant To Slow You Down” features some lush orchestration “I lost sight of the morning; ain’t nobody meant to slow you down; it’s a long way to go; ain’t nobody meant to slow you down.”. “Do Not Disturb Me,” “letting go of my ego, letting go of my shame, trying not to hurt my family name.”. On the loungey closer “Dreams Come True,” Ramirez sings, “I like the long shot, and I like when you play hard to get. Everyone was moving on, everyone but you. I feel like the long shot.”.
A wide-ranging musical tour de force, “All The Not So Gentle Reminders,” combines Ramirez’s remarkable vocals as he spins stories and paints poetic imagery. Ramirez has a gift for conveying passion and emotion with each and every note. Sit back and enjoy the latest from David Ramirez.
