Colin Fisher SUNS OF THE HEART
COLIN FISHER
SUNS OF THE HEART
Factor/Canada
Colin Fisher, all instruments/composer; David Psutka, producer/engineer/co-composer.
As the strains of this first song come across my listening room, it sounds like a sunrise. There’s a rumble of percussion, then synthesizer expressions sing the melody atop a feeling of weightlessness and space. The sound is ethereal as a guitar enters to solo. This original tune by Colin Fisher is titled, “Acts of Light” and it’s a master mix of sound effects, synthesizers, percussion and guitar. This is free or experimental jazz, played and created by two people: Colin Fisher and his engineer, David Psutka. The most compelling and impressive aspect of this album is that Colin Fisher plays every instrument.
Celebrated as one of Toronto, Canada’s busiest musician, Fisher is a multi-instrumental virtuoso. His main instrument is guitar, but he is also proficient on saxophone, drums, and a number of other instruments. This composer, a Free Jazz artist, brings his own brand of creativity and imagination to the recording studio. Locking hands with his producer, David Psutka (who is also his engineer and co-composer), Fisher creates music that is both lyrical, melodic, and absolutely without boundaries.
In one respect, it’s meditative music. Fisher brings soft tones and electronic effects to the forefront, before swooping off to a dynamic interval, one that features a fretless guitar improvising wildly. Colin Fisher seems infatuated with the textural range of music. He uses his vast knowledge of how to play so many various instruments, to pull out the best of his intentions. When you add this to his composing skills, it makes Fisher an awesome artist.
The engineer and co-producer, Psutka, has endeavored to reconfigure club music since 2008. His fusion mix of electronics, synthesizers and live instruments is fascinating. Both he and Colin Fisher are on the same artistic page. Fisher’s overall musical vision continues to expand. On this production, he reaches for places he’s never been before, with a goal of creating music that stimulates while entertaining. In 2021, he released “Reflections of the Invisible World,” a much more meditative recording than this current endeavor.
On this project, Colin Fisher creates a soundscape that represents the ever-constant sun. It feeds our bodies, hearts and minds. Without the sun there would be no humans on Earth. Colin Fisher uses his imaginative compositions to touch us deeply, illuminating us with free, experimental jazz on “Suns of the Heart.” Sit back, relax, and enjoy.
