The Blues DJ’s that would not Go Quietly! Caldonia’s Crossroads Radio!
Listen to our Exclusive Interview with Blues DJ Tim Powers of Caldonia’s Crossroads Radio!
AN Exclusive Interview with Tim Powers by Richard Lhommedieu on Mixcloud
Recently GoldRadio.net decided to discontinue the blues stream on their station and continue with only Oldies and Doo Whop. The ending of this stream was done very unceremoniously soon after the founder of the station passed away from a long illness. The new owners felt that the blues had to go for what they claimed were financial reasons and with no other explanation they shut down a long time Blues Internet radio station, and they told a large collection of Blues DJ’s they were not welcomed and were off the air.
Five of these DJ’s, not willing to take this as a setback, banded together to create their own Internet Radio Station called “Caldonia’s Crossroads Radio“.
These rebel DJ’s, Deb Magin (Downtown Deb), Art Perry, Christine DeProperty, Bruce Edward and Vicki/Tim Powers got together and decided that they could create an Internet radio station, play blues and roots music and make it a success. They set themselves up with “Stream Licensing” and the broadcast stream service Shoutcast and before they new it, Caldonia’s Crossroads Radio was born! You have to respect any group of Blues DJ’s that are willing to take on the financial obligations of running an internet station stickily because of their love for the music.

Editors NOTE:
When I was in NY I was the Blues Music Director for WUSB 90.1FM and I had 2 radio shows on that station as well. When I made the move to Atlanta Georgia I was looking for a way to get back on the air. I started to see if I can get on the local public radio stations but found them to be very closed to anyone new. I was talking with a Radio promoter friend and he said “Why don’t you try Internet Radio”? He pointed me to “Goldradio.net” which was run by Jerry Russel (AKA “The Chief”) who then pointed me to Deb Magin (AKA “Downtown Deb”) who ran the Blues Stream on Gold Radio. Deb went right to work and began to school me on the ins and outs of broadcasting on Internet Radio. She taught me how to use Sam Broadcaster which allowed me to broadcast directly from my Recording Studio “Midnight Circus Productions“.
I started to broadcast within a few days and “LIVE from the Midnight Circus” was born! I started just playing Blues, but within a few weeks I started to bring in touring artists and interviewing them over the air. The Chief seemed to like the show and tuned in often. But he took ill and it seemed the mood changed at the station. Soon I received an email that stated in no uncertain terms that I was no longer “Welcome” at Goldradio.net! I was livid at the time, but undaunted I was able to move over to Peachtreeradiofm.com who welcomed me with Open Arms. Ironically My show was voted by Blues Matters Magazine a #1 international Blues Radio Show! It was not soon after my departure that the blues stream was dismantled by the current owners of GoldRadio.net.
