Tears in My Eyes
Blue Heart Records
Keyboardist Anthony Geraci plays tribute to the old masters on his second album for Blue Heart Records. Included are two studio sessions, the first four songs were recorded in Massachusetts, while the remaining seven songs are from a session recorded in Prague. Geraci’s seventeen Blues Music Award nominations and 2021 BMA win reflect four decades of musical excellence.
I first heard Geraci in 1994 when he was paired with Sugar Ray Norcia on the Tone-Cool Records album “Take It From Me”. Geraci also toured with his own band and had released “Anthony Geraci and The Locomotives” the previous year. He has since recorded several Jazz albums showcasing another side of his talents. This is a follow-up recording to his first 2022 Blue Heart Productions album “Blues Called My Name”. All of the songs were written by Geraci.
Once again Sugar Ray Norcia is guest vocalist on three songs. “Broken Mirror, Broken Mirror”; the Charles Brown classic “Judge Oh Judge” with Mario Parrett on sax; and “Now What”. Geraci plays piano on the first two and both keyboard instruments on the latter. Barrett Anderson plays guitar and Drew Davies saxophone on “Owl’s Nest”. Barrett Anderson takes the vocals on both the title track and again on “Witchy Ways”.
“Blues For Willie J.” is a tribute to the late bassist Willie J. Campbell who was a band mate when Geraci played with “The Proven Ones”. Other musicians appearing include bassist Paul Loranger and drummers Marty Richards (Massachusetts) and Kurt Kalker (Prague). Other highlights include the soul-jazz instrumental “Oh No”; the playful boogie woogie “Ooeee”; the classy “Memphis Mist” with Anne Harris added on violin; and the “Lonely Country Road Blues”.
The album is dedicated to the memory of Louise Geraci, Otis Grand, and Willie J. Campbell. The listener will agree with Walter Trout when he states Geraci “continues to put out vital and beautiful art…his playing continues to be about honesty, invention, expression, and even humor”. This must have album is a culmination of a career that extends over 4 decades.
