JUST THE THREE OF US (ME THE TRUMPET AND THE PIANO)
Pacific Coast Jazz
Alan Chaubert, trumpet/piano; Belden Bullock, bass; Jon Di Flore, drums; Luis Quintero, percussion.
This unique band opens with Monk’s “Well you Needn’t.” I call the band ‘unique’ because Alan Chaubert plays both piano and trumpet at the very same time. Chaubert is accomplished on both instruments. Born in Morges, Switzerland, Alan Chaubert began playing trumpet around age twelve. By seventeen years of age, he was working as a professional musician. He earned his degree from the Geneva Conservatory before moving to the United States to study at Berklee College of Music. Somewhere in between, he honed his ‘chops’ on piano. I enjoyed their arrangement of the Thelonious Monk tune where his piano line echoes his trumpet melody. That takes a lot of skill to play both those instruments at the same time, with a steady tempo and impressive timbre.
On “Waltz for Ruth” (a Charlie Haden composition) Chaubert’s lovely tone on his horn reminds me a little bit of Chet Baker. Belden Bullock is lushly featured on his double bass with a splendid solo.
On the tune Norah Jones made so familiar “Don’t Know Why” Chaubert invites special guest, Luis Quintero to join them on percussion. Bill Evans wrote “Peace Piece.” Chaubert and his ensemble interpret it beautifully with his trumpet using an echo chamber effect to fatten the sound.
Chaubert’s interpretation of “I Will Say Goodbye” as a solo artist playing the two instruments simultaneously is very impressive!
Here is an album that’s not only a pleasure to listen to, it is a remarkable feat of excellence by Alan Chaubert. He is joined by the talents of Jon de Flore on trap drums and Beldon Bullock on bass to complete a masterfully played production that he calls “Just the Three of Us.”
