Songs from Beyond marks the return, after a 25-year hiatus of the neo-surf band, The Bomboras. This long-awaited comeback album finds this five-member outfit rocking harder than ever. Of course, the original surf bands made their mark in the ‘60s. Are you old enough to remember those radio hits from The Ventures such as “Wipeout” and “Walk, Don’t Run?” The Bomboras initially took their inspiration from that band, Dick Dale, The Sonics, and considering that they developed during the age of punk, bands like The Ramones, The Pandoras, and even X factored into their garage rock-surf hybrid sound. The band made four albums and disappeared shortly after Rob Zombie signed them to his Zombie a Go-Go label via Geffen Records for Head Shrinkin’ Fun.

The band is co-led by founding members – guitarist Gregg Hunt and keyboardist Jake Cavaliere, who is mostly still playing the vintage Farfisa organ. They are joined by longtime bandmates, bassist Shane Van Dyke, rhythm guitarist Johnny Devilla, and the newly added Dick Dale/Sonics legendary drummer Dusty Watson. Guitar master Deke Dickerson wrote the liner notes. The band understands that one key to good surf music, or neo-surf music, is brevity. After all, one can only bang one’s head a limited number of times and there is a limit to how much sweat one wants to pour out on the dance floor. Surely if this relentless, revved up music is blaring from the car stereo, the speed limits are likely exceeded. Here’s how Hunt, who co-wrote most of these songs with Cavaliere, describes the recipe – “Good surf music starts with a solid rhythm section. You then add all the extra flair that gives surf its feel: reverb/drip, staccato/double picking, possibly an electric piano, or anything else that sounds unique or innovative.”

The album runs and roars like a freight train bound for glory, God forbid anything that gets in its way. While some might characterize some of the original surf music (The Ventures, Jan and Dean) as light, The Bomboras sound recklessly heavy at every turn. Turn it up and unwind.
