Making a Scene Presents an interview with Mehuman
Folk Hop For Hip Folk, is the signature sound coined by singer/songwriter Mehuman (PRON. “May-mon”), and it resonates with authenticity and integrity throughout her music. Mehuman’s personal narrative is fraught with love, joy, loss and sorrow. From the vantage point of her most recent release. “Beautiful Ashes, her perspective is further entwined by the thematic threads of redemption and restoration Beautiful Ashes” is a collection of twelve vignettes produced by Darren Elder (The Halo Studio, Maine), with origins in Folk, Rock Jazz, and Old Time Gospel music. Whether joyfully exuberant, or belligerently grave, each track is inhabited with a rocking “blueness”, like a new mother’s comforting sway. The songs are transparent and the highlights of Mehuman’s earnest search for reconciliation, revival, and perhaps, relief? For certain, “Beautiful Ashes” is a love offering a spiritual truce that embraces forgiveness while awaiting true peace.
Mehuman’s colorfully storied pilgrimage towards the emotional monuments of shelter and security resounds with preternatural determination in “My Home Is On The Water,” “Only Angels”, and “Beauty In The Ashes.” Essentially they are declarations of her faith in the powers of, “The Divine”, to heal and restore what is ugly and broken within each of us. “Beautiful Ashes, is aptly named for the kind of scarred loveliness, Wabi-Sabi, (A Japanese concept for “finding beauty in imperfections, impermanence, and the incomplete”), or the ashen remains left after a purifying fire. “Beautiful Ashes” is bittersweet with the nostalgia of “The Winding Road”, “Ticket” and “China Will Jump. Through restorative grooves and keening melodies, Mehuman audibly navigates a map of passions, not fit for the faint of heart. She is complicated, problematic, distinctive and real. She has lived a life of both grace and regret. At times, Mehuman is a kaiju, a dangerous “strange beast. She’s an ambush predator or Femme Fatale Mantis growling out “Heavyweight” or “Black & Blue”. Then murmuring oaths through the melancholy dream-lens of This Side of Heaven,” “High-Wire, and “Tremble” Mehuman deftly turns her guileless and tender gaze towards her “beloved”,

I want them to pow (while they are still alive to hear it) that they have influenced and impacted my life with their artistry. I want them to know that their music makes a difference and matters, especially in this uncertain times. Regarding Mehuman’s own prolific efforts, she confesses. I’m still processing what I’ve seen, heard, learned and unlearned during this season of global grief, upset, resilience and innovation. I feel very much like a rising phoenix, shedding the charred things that no longer serve me or no longer reflect how I want to occur in this world. So, I am allowing new songs to find me.” Mehuman smiled. “I write daily but without forcing anything. Then, I breath and quiet myself to actively wait to receive whatever a song has to offer me and others,” says Mehuman, “and sometimes it is nothing and sometimes it is a windfall!” “Either way.
