Allen and Douglas Imagine Nothingness
Imagine Nothingness
Today I would like to invite you to the new Allen & Douglas album.
Allen & Douglas are Craig Allen and Steven Douglas from Birmingham and what you can call long-term friends because they have been making music together since 1979, interrupted by short breaks for work, travel, etc. In the past you could see them practicing under bridges or old railway stations. Today they are a little more comfortable and, as they say of themselves, are no longer as decadent as they were in the past.
They have released countless albums and the range of their songs is as wide as it is varied. And now they present us “Imagine Nothingness”, 16 songs that inspire and everyone can pick something for their taste.
First song and a great start is “Catching 22” and what immediately catches your ear are the voices, rough and haunting, not smoothly polished and that wouldn’t fit either because both artists are authentic in what they do. It’s the same with the sound, rasping guitars and on the other hand harmonious, simply brilliant.
This can also clearly be heard in the title track “Imagine Nothingness”. Vigorous vocals, meaningful lyrics, definitely one of my favorites on the album.
“Manifesto”, a quiet song, almost a ballad, played beautifully and also here a text with a message, a second highlight for me.
“Mr Mathematics” is one of those songs that you can hear again and again and yet it’s new every time and for me better every time you listen, straight, that’s what it’s best for me.
“Who Am I” is also one of the more “worn” songs with a great melody and mellow sound, reminds me a little of the Beatles’ ballads but with more power.
Those were just a few of the songs you can expect and I strongly recommend listening to the full album because it’s brilliant. Honest, pure and an unmistakable mixture of folk, pop, punk elements and not just an album but something that the artists have put their very own stamp on.
