Stoney Plain Records
Six-time Grammy nominee Maria Muldaur was raised in Greenwich Village. In 1963 she began her recording career as a member of The Even Dozen Jug Band. She left the following year and joined The Jim Kweskin Band where she married Geoff Muldaur. As a duo she released two albums with Geoff before releasing her 1973 solo debut which contained the solo hit single “Midnight at The Oasis”. This is her forty-second solo album.
Dubbed the “The First Lady of Roots Music” this time Muldaur ventures into vintage Jazz and Blues as she teams-up with the New Orleans street band “Tuba Skinny”. When Muldaur first heard “Tuba Skinny”, originally from Woodstock, NY; she was impressed that they were true to the atmosphere of that bygone era.
The band includes vocalist Muldaur, Todd Burdick, Tuba; Shaye Cohn. Coronet; Barnabus Jones, trombone; Jason Lawrence, banjo; Craig Flory, Clarinet; Greg Sherman, guitar; Max Bien Kahn, guitar; and Robin Rupuzzi, Washboard.
Obscure covers include two from Frankie “Half Pint” Jaxon; two from Valaida Snow; and onr each from the Goofus Five; The Boswell Sisters; Ivy Anderson and the Duke Ellington Orchestra; and Irving Berlin.
Stony Plain called the album an amazing show, “a match made in heaven”. Muldaur concludes “it is my hope that…you will be inspired to look up these forgotten artists and enjoy the incredible music they left behind. Highly recommended.
