Dumpstaphunk Where Do We Go From Here
Where Do We Go From Here
Mascot Label Group/The Funk Garage
Art “Poppa Funk” Neville formed the New Orleans Funk band, Neville Sounds, in the early 1960’s and later changed their name to the Meters. With his brothers Cyril, Aaron and Charles, he also formed the Neville Brothers; and The Funky Meters with a different lineup. Aaron’s son Ian Neville was a member of the Funky Meters from 2007 – 2011.
Aaron’s other son Ivan Neville, and nephew to the other Neville Brothers released four solo albums of his own from 1988 to 2004. Both Ivan and Ian have performed as part of The Neville Brothers. For the last seventeen years the brothers, Ivan and Ian, have also fronted Dumpstaphunk, releasing their own debut in 2007, and following up with 2010’s “Everybody Want Sum”; and 2013’s “Dirty Word”, for which they won an award as Offbeat Magazine’s “New Orleans Best Funk Band”.
This new album is their fourth. On ‘Where Do We Go From Here”, their best to date, the band displays their complex style combining funky syncopations with Neville worthy songwriting. Ivan, Hammond organ, clavinet, Nord synth and vocals; and Ian, electric guitar; play alongside original members Tony Hall, bass, guitar, and vocals; and Nick Daniels, bass and vocals. They are joined by new members Deven Trusclair, drums; trombonist Alex Wasily, and trumpeter Ryan Nyther.
Dumpstaphunk opens with the “United Nations Stomp”, written and first recorded by Buddy Miles in 1973, featuring special guest guitarist Marcus King. The two other covers include Sly and The Family Stone’s “In Time”; and Gerald Tillman’s “Let’s Get At It”.
Eight of the eleven tracks are originals including “Make It After All”, the instrumental “Dumpstamental”, and the fabulous title track “Where Do We Go From Here”. They play a mix of New Orleans funk and old school R & B. Dumpstaphunk is the band for this generation.
