Australian born Anni Piper was first influenced by listening to the blues-rock of Stevie Ray Vaughan. The bassist released her debut recording “Jailbait” in 2004. She signed with Bluesleaf Records and between 2008 and 2013 released three albums. Due to her wardrobe and pin up modeling she has been called the “Bettie Page of the Blues”, and she is not afraid to use her feminine wiles, as it’s been said she can “lull men to their doom”. In 2014 Piper relocated to the states. Two years later she released her highly successful last recording “More Guitars Than Friends”. She now resides in Portland, Oregon.
Piper, bass and vocals, is joined by “her favorite musicians from the Pacific Northwest” including five different guitarists; Bob Shoemaker is featured on five tracks. Also featured are three drummers including Dave Melyon who plays on eight of the eleven tracks. The album is co-produced by Piper and Jimi Bott; and engineered and mixed by Bott at his Roseleaf Recording Studio in Portland.
Piper has written five new songs and reprises one older one. The sexy “Uncrustables” opens with Melyan’s drums, Bott’s percussion and Piper’s infectious bass line, as she sings the smokin’ hot lyrics; Troy Johnson takes a fine guitar solo. Guitarists Ben Rice and AC Porter trade licks on “Big Bengal” and once again Piper teaches us some ‘new’ slang. The title track features the lyric “you make me feel like I’m a blow-up doll”. Joseph Barton plays guitar on “I’m gonna mix and mingle with ‘24 Guys Named Dave” with the hilarious line “Dave the milkman fathered my child”. The only older tune is the title track from Pipers 2009 Blues Leaf compilation “Two’s Company”.
Selected covers include “Get Right Church” with an arrangement from Mississippi Fred MacDowell; Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac”; Taj Mahal’s “Cake Walk Into Town”; Lowell George’s “Sailin’ Shoes”, and the most suggestive version of Willie Dixon’s “Built For Comfort” you could ever want to hear.
Piper is without a doubt the sexiest femme fatale since Rosie Ledet. This is a whole lotta’ fun.
