Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Andrew “Jr. Boy” Jones!
Andrew was born October 16, 1948 in Dallas Texas. Both parents loved music. His mother Gladys was a vocalist with an orchestra headed by close family friend Adolphus Sneed who his brother, sister, and he would call uncle. Andrew’s mother bought his first guitar when he was seven years old. After seeing his potential his uncle Adolphus bought him a better one. Andrew began his professional career at age 16 playing with Freddie Kings backing band, the Thunderbirds. In 1967 Jones joined R&B, soul singer Bobby Patterson and the Mustangs. They signed with Abnak Records and recorded several 45 singles on the Jet Star label. During this time he saw and met session guitar great Cornell Dupree.
Dupree use to sit in with Jones and the other musicians on Andrew’s guitar. In 1973 blues great Freddie King asked Jones to join his band again, which led to Jones recording on Freddie King Live Album (Larger Than Life). King had recorded the (Going Down) album, and they were touring excessively with rock groups such as Grand Funk Railroad, Rare Earth, Tower of Power, Marshall Tucker Band, etc…. In 1976 Andrew joined the Dallas based band called the Creators. He wrote and played with the Creators, and wrote the now vintage soul song (Blame It On Me) for RCA Records and provided a supporting role on guitar for the band. In the 80’s Andrew was working with local artist R.L. Griffin and co-produced with Al “TNT” Braggs, R.L. Griffens vinyl (I want to Be Rich), and also toured with R&B singing great Johnny Taylor in 1984-87. In late 1987 Andrew went to California to join Russell Jackson, and Tony Coleman as the Silent Partners. Jackson and Coleman are both known for their work with B.B. King and Bobby Bland. Jones, Jackson, and Coleman did extensive session work and touring with different artist such as Katie Webster, Charlie Musselwhite, and opened for the Neville Brothers, and Leon Russell with Edgar Winter. In mid 1988 Jones along with Jackson and Coleman recorded with Katie Webster on her critically praised Alligator Records album, (Swamp Boogie Queen). In late 1989 Andrew and Charlie Musselwhite were recording on Sonny Rhodes album, and they hit it off. Later Musselwhite talked to Jones about starting a band and would like Jones to be a part of it. In the early to mid 1990’s they recorded three albums together: (Ace of Harps), (Signature), and (In My Time). Andrew co-wrote two songs with Mussewhite, River Hip Mama, on (Ace of Harps), and It’s Getting Warm In Here, on (Signature) for Alligator Records.
The band won a W.C. Handy award for best blues band of the year in 1995. Andrew returned to Dallas in 1996 and later that year signed and recorded his first CD as a solo artist for J.S.P. Records, (I Need Time). Also in 1996 Jr.Boy was awarded a Texas Tornado certificate for guitar, stating that he is one of the best musicians in Texas, perhaps in the world. In 1998, Rounder Records released Andrew’s second CD, (Watch What You Say), and was also nominated for a W.C. Handy award for best new blues artist of the year. In 2001, Andrew’s third CD, (Mr. Domestic) was released on his own label GalexC Records. In 2005, Andrew signed and recorded his fourth and his first live CD, (Jr. Boy Live) with 43rd Big Idea Records. 2009, Andrew signed with Electro-Fi Records, and released his fifth CD, (Gettin’ Real). His 6th CD with 43rd Big Idea Records in 2012 was (I Know What It’s Like). In 2012 Andrew also recorded the (Hell in my House) DvD with Paul Benjamin on his the North Atlantic Blues label. In 2013 he recorded a live vinyl called (Ready To Play) for Grounds for Thoughts/Kelly Wicks. 2015, (the Lonestar Guitarman Andrew Jr.Boy Jones) DVD was released on J.S.P Records for the BBC documentry for BluesArchives.com . Also Andrew produced and recorded the critically acclaimed record (Raices) in 2016 by Luis El Haragon Alvarez, which won a Latin Billboard Award for Spanish Blues Album of the year. In 2017 Andrew released his newest album, (It’s Me Again) on his own label GalexC Records. He also produced and played on Kerrie Lepai’s record, (Organic Blues) which is also released on GalexC Records. His last three projects are in his mind his best to date but that is debatable. He has toured: Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Chile, England, France, Italy, Lebanon, Monaco, Switzerland just to name a few. He has toured in France and Belgium with the Chicago Blues Festival tour three times. Once with his own incredible band. Andrew has recorded an played a very visible and active supporting role in many influential and popular icons in the blues. Andrew is working on his newest project of original songs currently. Jones is a incredible asset to any studio session and project.
