Dana Fuchs Gives You Audio / Visual Whiplash With
Songs From The Road DVD/CD
“You will love hearing Dana Fuchs sing like the big cats in all the range from a kittenish purr to her lioness’ roar.”
American Blues Scene
Ruf Records recording artist, Dana Fuchs brings her fantastic live show to her fans’ living rooms with a vibrant DVD/CD performance, called Songs From The Road, filmed at the Highline Ballroom in New York City on March 14th 2014. Dana’s powerful, vocal presence is perfectly complimented by her strong backing band, with longtime songwriting partner and guitarist, Jon Diamond at the helm. Directed by Kevin Mackall, this double threat of music and video captures the lightning in a bottle of a Dana Fuchs show. Dana Fuchs Songs From The Road will be released November 11th on Ruf Records, which is distributed by Allegro.
This double threat of music and concert video is packed with material spanning the years since Dana left her home in Florida to pursue her music career full time. Before she headed to the bright lights of Broadway in NYC and stole the silver screen in the cult classic movie, Across The Universe, when all of this was just a dream; she laid out of plan. Her life story is one for the ages and reads like a classic novel adapted into a joyous, sorrowful, empowering screenplay. Born in New Jersey, growing up in Wildwood, Florida, where she would sneak off to gospel churches to sing and by sixteen she was fronting a band of men twice her age at the local Holiday Inn. At 19, she made a bee-line to the Big Apple to try to make it all work. After a few years of playing dives, lounges and hanging out with fellow musicians, her drive got her what she wanted – a chance to record. Her debut album, Lonely For A Lifetime, came out in 2003 and then things started to change for Dana.
Shortly after her debut album came a turn Off-Broadway with the production of “Love, Janis.” A brilliantly written play inspired by letters from the legendary Texas singer, Janis Joplin, with whom Dana shared a similar background and inspiration. Dana immersed herself in the torn singer’s life.
In 2005, Dana released her fan favorite, best-selling live CD/DVD, Live in NYC.
“Seeing her live, as ripped through songs (just) encouraged my obsession.” – Elmore Magazine
Then came Across The Universe in 2007 where she plays the role of Sadie, a part written specifically for Dana by the film’s director Julie Taymor. Dana garnered high praise for her on screen debut and was exposed to legions of new young fans. In 2009, Dana released her second critically acclaimed studio album Love To Beg and cemented her status as a world class singer songwriter in 2011 with Bliss Avenue. Now comes Songs From The Road and from the first strike of the drums on the song, “Bliss Avenue” Dana’s entrance commands your attention. Fuchs holds the whole ballroom in the palm of her hand will all eyes on her as she moves across the stage and treats us with songs and stories from her independent 2003 debut, to covers from Otis Redding and The Beatles, plus favorites from her Ruf Records releases, “Love To Beg” and “Bliss Avenue.”
“…purges her soul in a starker more naked way in order to exorcise demons getting just a mite too familiar.” – Folk And Music Exchange (FAME)
The top-notch backing musicians and voices are powerful and allow Fuchs to ride the wave of audio and visual dynamics as she leads us through the night. Jon Diamond, Dana’s longtime songwriter and guitarist leads the band of Pete Levin (keys), Jack Daley (bass) and Joe Daley (Drums) and the Screaming Sirens – a trio of female singers handpicked by Dana – Elaine Caswell, Nicki Richards and Bette Sussman.
This is as close as you can get to the experience of a live Dana Fuchs show and as always, it all comes together the moment she hits the stage. This release is not to be missed.
