Eric Lindell was born in San Mateo, California and spent his formative years in the greater San Francisco area absorbing sounds and learning how to craft a song. He formed a few punky garage bands as his influences included rock, blues, soul and R n’ B. In 1996 he traveled to New Orleans to record his debut album and decided to relocate there three years later.
Lindell recorded four more independently produced albums before signing with Alligator Records. Between 2006 and 2009 he recorded three albums for Alligator including “Low on Cash, Rich in Love” and “Gulf Coast Highway”. Band members included Chris Mule and Aaron Wilkinson now members of the Honey Island Swamp Band; saxophonists Jimmy Carpenter and Derek Houston, and drummer Stanton Moore. Critics proclaimed “A tremendous raw talent with a poet’s soul…Lindell writes from the heart with a fully realized musical vision” and “stellar, sublime blue eyed soul and romping New Orleans R & B, played at the intersection of soul, blues and roots rock”.
For his seventeenth album Lindell returns to Alligator Records. Lindell has written twelve new songs, one co-written. The album, produced by Lindell and engineer Ben Mumphrey, was recorded in Bogalusa, La. at the famed Studio In The Country. The production is sparse and airy as this time Lindell plays just about every instrument including acoustic and electric guitars (a Fender Telecaster and a Gibson ES-335 twelve string), bass, Hammond B-3 organ and synthesizer. He is joined by Willie McMains, drums and percussion; and on one track by pianist Kevin McKendree.
The mostly autobiographical songs paint a vivid picture of Lindell’s everyday life. Beginning with the sensitive title track Lindell sings about his “Grandpa Jim”, his old friend “Pat West”, and “Kelly Ridge” one of his favorite places. “Mille Kay” features McKendree. On “Claudette” Lindell plays harmonica. “How Could This Be? You Stop Lovin’ Me” was co-authored with Seth Walker.
Against all the clamor Lindell remains a breath of fresh air. Lindell says of his homecoming to Alligator, “I’m so excited to get back to focusing on what I do and have such a great team behind me”. It’s a pleasure to catch up again with the talented Lindell.
