The Josh Garrett Band – Darwin’s Burgers and Blues-July 21
Making a Scene presents a Show Review of Indie Blues artist The Josh Garrent Band at Darwins Burgers and Blues
Saturday night we ventured out to Darwin’s Burgers and Blues in Sandy Springs to hear a band we knew nothing about, The Josh Garretts Band. They turned out to be amazing. I don’t know the names of the musicians who were with Garrett, but they were tremendous, particularly the keyboard player. who was really outstanding.
Garrett himself is an excellent guitar player, singer, and vocalist. He is from Houma, Louisiana, which is bayou country. He put a lot of Louisiana music into his performance, which bridged blues, rock ”n roll, and country to provide a highly entertaining show. While he did some quality original tunes, it was the covers that really got the audience enthralled. The highlight was a killer version of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken.” That song is always a crowd-pleaser, but when done with the energy and finesse of a showman like Garrett and a talented band like he has, it becomes something that transforms the ordinary, at least for a little while. And that is one of the things we go listen to live music for, those transcendent moments that happen nowhere else.
The other really special moment for me came when Garrett performed a simple, stripped down version of Lyle Lovett’s “If I Had A Boat.” That is one of my favorite songs and I have never heard anyone cover it before. Thanks. Josh. for choosing that funny, whimsical song.
Kudos to Josh Garrett and his band for a wonderful show that warmed the heart and tickled the toes. And a salute to Darwin’s for once again introducing us to a band that we will look forward to seeing again!
