Deborah has often said she is more comfortable “live” but this is her best studio recording yet and I’m sure it will be her most commercially successful album. Her effort is augmented by a crackerjack band. Per Hanson, the drummer who has played with Ronnie Earl, Magic Dick, J. Geils and others, along with bassist Noel Neal, Kenny’s brother, set the pace that help her deliver the goods. Keyboardist Ken Clark and second guitarist Hiromasa Suzuki complete the unit.

The concept is explored in the 11 songs tied together by a question. The four originals including the opener; “Bad Boy” explores what she’s got.  “Can You Hear Me?’ and the title tune, “What about Love?” continue the theme. The highlight of the album is “The River Wild”, a playfully sexy instrumental interlude.

Deborah Coleman is an exciting guitarist, a distinctive vocalist and she knows a good song when she hears one. “Lie No Better” and “Healing Ground” were both written by Gary Nicholson, the former with Delbert McClinton; “If you can’t lie no better, you might as well tell the truth”. The later opens with a strong guitar solo and then continues to rock your socks off. “Undeniable” another highlight was written by newcomer Ellis Hooks. Jim Weider’s “Loves like Rain” follows. The last two songs “Lookin’ for a Real Love”, and “A Woman in Love”, were both written by Bill Chinnock.

“When Will I Be Loved”, the old Everly Brothers classic doesn’t lend itself to be blues; but when Deborah sings in Spain next month this is the one song they will probably most remember, and I’m sure it’s a crowd pleaser. So if its thrills you’re seeking look no further because that’s what Deborah is all about.
