Myles Goodwyn is the Canadian singer, guitarist, and keyboardist for the band April Wine. He is a legend in Canadian rock history and a 2010 inductee in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Goodwyn has produced twenty plus albums most of them with his rock band. His last April Wine album was 2006’s “Roughly Speaking”.

Goodwyn’s interest in the blues began in the 1960’s when he began listening to B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters. A prolific songwriter he began writing blues songs but decided to save them for the blues album he knew he would someday make. He began work on this project sometime in 2008. He decided however to only record with blues musicians so that they could bring some authenticity to his songs. All of the songs were written by Goodwyn except for one.

The band includes Goodwyn, lead vocals, guitar and keyboards; Mike Carrol or Blair Mackay, drums; and Richard Fallus, Alex Fraser, Russal Jackson or Bruce Dixon, bass.

“Hate To See You Go (But Love to Watch You Walk Away)” features a horn arrangement by saxophonist Eric Khayat, a multi-instrumentalist, who is a pop, soul, rock and jazz accompanist. Featured on slide guitar is Shaun Verreault the leader of another Canadian rock band “Wide Mouth Mason”. Goodwyn’s vocal highlights this fine production.

The only song not written by Goodwyn is Jesse Winchester’s “Isn’t That So” with the lyric “you have to go where the heart says go”. Obviously Goodwyn strongly identifies himself with this song on which he plays both piano and guitar. Featured is background vocalist Sonia Ball.

“It’s All Brand New It’ll Take Time to Get Used To” features Goodwyn on organ. Amos Garrett guests on guitar. The backing vocal is sung by Emily LaMarche.

“Tell Me Where I’ve Been (So I Don’t Go There Anymore)” is a country styled tune. Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne sits in on piano. Steve Segal plays lead guitar.

“Ain’t Gonna Bath in The Kitchen Anymore” is a fun song. Goodwyn grew up poor in a small town as he was born in New Brunswick, Canada. He honed his skills playing in cover bands and began songwriting as soon as he could play guitar. Bill Stevenson is featured on keyboards.

“You Broke My Heart and I’ll Hate You (Till Death Do Us Part)”. Wayne is again featured on piano; while Frank Marino of the band Mahogany Rush is featured on guitar. This is another fabulous production.

“I’m just a Good Man in a Bad Place” features Garret Mason on guitar. “Brand New Cardboard Belt” features guitarists Steve Segal on slide; and Marino. “Weeping Willow Tree Blues” features David Wilcox on acoustic guitar.

“We used to rock and roll and carry on. This is the Last Time I’ll Ever Sing the Blues for you”. Rick Derringer is the featured guitarist.

Goodwyn plays piano on “Nobody Lies About Having the Blues” also featuring Jack DeKeyser on guitar.

“You Never Got The Best of Me” features guitarists Garret and Segal. Dewey Reeds plays harp.

Goodwyn has a beautiful voice and he really excels as a songwriter. I can’t remember when there were this many memorable songs on a recording. I’m hoping we hear a lot more from bluesman Goodwyn.
