An In Depth Interview with Andy T and Anson Funderburgh
The Andy T Band, fronted by guitarist Andy T, began in 2011 as the Andy T – Nick Nixon Band, with vocalist Nick Nixon. As Blues Underground Network said, “Simply put, Andy T and James ‘Nick’ Nixon have quickly risen to the top of many people’s lists of Great Collaborations.”
Upon Nick Nixon’s 2016 retirement, Andy T and the band enlisted “Alabama Mike” Benjamin as lead singer. Mike is a dynamic, energetic vocalist that strongly connects with his audience. He’s
a true force on the microphone with his first rate, church house tenor. He delivers a sound that will remind you of a young BB King, Buddy Guy, Elmore James, and Little Johnny Taylor.
Now, Anson Funderburgh has joined the band! This BMA-nominated guitarist has led his band Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets since 1977. The band has won 10 Handys. Anson himself has played with Delbert McClinton, Boz Scaggs, Snooks Eaglin, Grady Gaines, Earl King and Jimmy Buffett.
The Andy T Band’s latest release, Numbers Man, was produced by Anson, and features the great Kim Wilson’s harmonica on one of the tracks. The album was nominated for a 2016 Blues Music Award as “Best Traditional Blues Album”, and the band was nominated for “Band of the Year” by the Blues Foundation.
Live, the group has been extremely well received, with highlights including the 2016 King Biscuit Festival and the Jan 2017 Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise.
The Andy T Band featuring Alabama Mike has recently completed a new album, again produced by Anson Funderburgh, to be released in 2017.
This band is a force to be reckoned with and will not disappoint. Rick Estrin of “Rick Estrin and The Nightcats” stated, “Alabama Mike is a true star, he’s one of my absolute favorites”. This is one of the best touring bands on the circuit and a collaboration that cannot be missed!
