Making a Scene Presents an interview with Robin Sedivy aka Graybeat
Robin Sedivy’s musical journey is a vibrant tapestry woven from dedication, talent, and versatility, stretching across multiple genres and roles throughout his dynamic career. He began as a percussionist, playing in school concert, symphonic, and marching bands, and notably serving as a timpanist in the Minnesota Central Lakes Regional Band. Robin found his first true passion behind the drum kit in seventh grade, a passion that grew as he performed with school jazz bands from eighth grade through his college years. His early musical experiences also included playing drums with The Magic Mushponies, contributing to two recorded albums, and participating in the first off-Broadway production of The Who’s “Tommy.”
Robin experienced a profound musical evolution during his college years through his work with Sowah Mensah and the Macalester African Music Ensemble, showcasing his talents as a vocalist, flautist, xylophonist, lead drummer, and percussionist. Even during this transformative period, Robin continued performing and recording on drums, providing both rhythmic support and backing vocals for bands such as The Stylites, Byron’s Bulb, Zion Tribe, and The Trucks Through This Town. He later toured as a drummer with the reggae ensemble Dred I Dread.
After an extended hiatus, Robin returned to music in 2018 as the innovative artist and producer, GrayBeat. Under this identity, Robin has cultivated an ambitious musical project that has become his primary creative outlet. In 2024, GrayBeat earned recognition with the MN Synthy Award for Best Synth Pop Record for “GalactiCruisin’,” following two impactful years of mentorship under Grammy-winning producer Michael Mangini. Robin has also emerged as a dedicated advocate and mentor, supporting the next generation of musicians through his role as a student and artist liaison for renowned vocal coach Melissa Mulligan, technology speaker appearances at events such as Find Your Stage, and mentorship with the MN Music Coalition.
Throughout his career, Robin has performed in significant venues and cities across the United States, opening for legendary acts like Big Brother & the Holding Company, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, and Steel Pulse. His performances have reached audiences at prestigious events and locations, including the National Teacher Conference, Disneyland, and the 10,000 Lakes Music Festival.
In the studio, Robin’s extensive credits highlight his diverse skill set, including collaborations with artists such as Hookdiggy and Wayne Sayres. His roles span drumming, percussion, engineering, songwriting, composing, producing, mixing, and mastering, reflecting a holistic and self-empowered approach to music creation. Driven by unwavering dedication, exceptional talent, and boundless enthusiasm, Robin Sedivy continues to inspire and influence within the music industry.
