This is Matt “The Rattlesnake” Lesch’s sophmore album following on the heels of his debut release “Furious Strike”. Lesch wrote and arranged all the songs and horns. The album was recorded, and mixed by Paul Niehaus IV at the Blue Lotus Studio, in St. Louis. Lesch learned guitar studying blues masters, the three Kings, Buddy Guy, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, and Big George Brock, becoming Brock’s lead guitarist.
The album opens with “Feel So Good” with the Michael Burks rhythm section, including Chuck “Popcorn” Louden (Buddy Miles, Johnny Taylor, and Lucky Peterson) on drums; Paul Niehaus IV, bass; and Taylor Streiff, Hammond B-3; “I wanna tell you about a girl of mine, she makes me feel so good”. On “He’s A Bluesman”, Taylor Streiff plays, piano; Jonny “Diamond” Erblich, harmonica; Tecora Morgan, bass; and Riley Morgan Jr., drums; vocalist Lesch plays some great guitar as he sings “he’s a bluesman through and through, they call him a lover…he’s the cheapest man to sing the blues”.
“Big Legged Woman” includes Luke Sailor, piano; and the three-piece horn section of Ben Shafer, tenor saxophone, Ian Buschmann, baritone saxophone, and Dan Smith, trumpet; “I got a big legged woman, she knows just what to do”. On “I’m So Tired” again with the fabulous horns, Lesch sings “got a mean disposition, I’m so tired of all your games, when it comes to hard luck and trouble, I’m so tired”.
“She’s My Everything”, “I got a fine little girl, she’s my red hot mama, she’s my everything”; with rockin’ guitar from vocalist Lesch, Taylor Streiff, organ; and the rhythm section of Thornton, bass; and “Popcorn” drums. On “Sittin’ At The Station” Lesch chants “I gotta leave this town cause I’m playing a loosing game”, with Niehaus on rhythm guitar, Wayne Sharp, organ; John Davies, bass; and “Popcorn”, drums.
Lesch croons “I call my baby on the telephone, but I got no where to call my own, I’m ‘Going Through This World All Alone'”. The title track “Blues Cut Like Glass”, Lesch switches to bass, “Popcorn” is on drums, Luke Sailor plays piano with the horns; as Lesch chimes “there’s been good times and there’s been bad times, you know the blues, they cut like glass”.
“Keep Your Promise” features 2nd guitarist Rich McDonough joining Lesch, Wayne Sharp, organ, and the rhythm section of John Davies, bass; and “Popcorn” drums; as Lesch sings “you got to keep your promise, but you can’t even keep your man”. “Let Me Cook For Ya” is a wild instrumental with Thornton, bass; and “Popcorn” drums.
“I Still Got My Blues”, features Lesch on lead and rhythm guitar, with Taylor Strieff, piano; Thornton, bass; and “Popcorn” drums; as Lesch sings “you said that you loved me, you said that you cared, I got you all my love, but you ran away with a millionaire”. The closer “Jammin’ At Paul’s” is another instrumental featuring Sean “Mack” McDonald (ZZ Top and John Nemeth) on 2nd guitar and organ.
Big George Brock says it best when he says “Matt can feel the blues”. You can feel it too as Matt “The Rattlesnake” Lesch plays as sings with heart, on this new album “Blues Cut Like Glass”. This is highly recommended listening.
