Highway 20 Records
The three-time Grammy Award winning artist Lucinda Williams has just announced the December 6th, release of “Sings The Beatles From Abbey Road”. Recorded at Abbey Road Studio Two, in London England, the album was mixed at Room & Board Studio in Nashville, Tn. by Ray Kennedy and mastered by Pete Lyman. The album was produced by Ray Kennedy and Tom Overby. All songs were written by John Lennon & Paul McCartney, except for two written by George Harrison.
This new collection serves as Vol. 7 of the celebrated Lu’s Jukebox series and the first new volume in almost four years. The series features themed sets of cover songs curated by Lucinda and streamed for a fee with proceeds going to designated venues. Previous outings included A Tribute To Tom Petty; From Memphis To Muscle Shoals; A Night Of Bob Dylan Songs; A Night Of 60’s Country Classics; A Rockin’ Little Christmas; and A Tribute To The Rolling Stones.
These songs are based on the original arrangements with Lucinda’s expressive vocals. “Don’t Let Me Down” opens with the lyric “nobody ever loved me like you do, from the first time that he really loved me…don’t let me down”. “I’m Looking Through You” follows, “you don’t look different, but you have changed…I’m looking through you, your not the same”.
“Can’t Buy Me Love” is another great vocal from Lucinda with Dave Sutton, bass; Butch Norton, drums; guitarists Doug Pettibone & Marc Ford; and Richard Causon on the Hammond B-3; the background vocalist is Shoban M. Kennedy.
“Rain” includes more harmony from Kennedy as Lucinda croons “If the rain comes, you might as well hide your head…I don’t mind, the weather is fine”. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is a George Harrison composition and it’s his songs more than any others that are the most magnificently performed. “Let It Be”, “when I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary come to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be”. “Yer Blues” in the evening, when I’m lonely, I wanna die…I don’t know the reason why”. “I Got A Feeling”, a feeling deep inside, I got a feeling, I can’t hide, oh no, oh no”.
“I’m So Tired”, is another expressive vocal, “I’m so tired, I haven’t slept a wink, I’m so tired my mind is on the brink…although I’m so tired I’ll have another cigarette…I’ll give you everything I got for a little piece of mind”. “Something” is a second George Harrison tune, and my favorite “there’s something in the way she moves, that affects me like no other”.
“With A Little Help From My Friends”, “I get by with a little help from my friends…what to do when my love is away…I get by with a little help from my friends”. The closer “The Long and Winding Road”, “the wild and windy night, that the rain washed away, left a room of tears, you left me standing here, a long time ago, don’t leave me standing here, lead me to your door”.
Lucinda Williams “Sings The Beatles From Abbey Road” is an inspirational example of an artist who, at 71 years old, continues to perform and find new ways to fuel her creative fire that continues to burn, as brightly as ever.
