This is the new recording from The Dennis Spencer Group whose name has been styled after the The Spencer Davis Group, an early and influential group, that helped launch the career of Stevie Winwood. Dennis’ bio describes him, he was bequeathed his first guitar by his father. At the age of 16 he got backstage at a B.B. King concert and jammed with the legend for a few minutes. Dennis went home and tried to look up “Blues” in the dictionary, he couldn’t find anything and has been looking for the blues ever since. Dennis lived fast, he partied at Studio 54, learned how to smuggle guitars to London and turn a profit, and it was there, under the Eiffel Tower, that he asked his girlfriend to marry him, and she said no. That same girlfriend later died of a drug overdose. Fast living turned into barely living. After being locked out of his hotel rooms Dennis would walk the streets of NYC. At a low point Dennis went to a Gypsy in Times Square for advice, she turned down his $5, and told him he had no future. Dennis wound up in prison, where he was in three fights, as legend would have it, he won all but two. He was taken to a hospital in a body bag, and was officially pronounced dead only for the coroner to find a heartbeat. Dennis has survived car crashes, motorcycle accidents, and gunfights. He finally kicked his drug habit, and married his fourth wife. He has been a millionaire and bankrupt twice. All that experience can be heard on this new album.
“Bluesman From Jupiter” has been produced by Dennis Spencer Goddard, and co-produced by Robert Bowman. It was recorded at Pacifica Studios in Los Angeles. The album opens with the title track, a narrative with some great Hammond B-3 organ from Mikal Majeed, and the lyric “I got Karma on my mind”. “Cheap Entertainment” follows, it’s another great vocal with the rhythm section of Terence Johnson, drums; while Majeed handles the bass line on his organ. “Cold Corner” is another great vocal displaying Dennis’ vocal range, with some more great guitar. “Your Secret is Safe”, “with me, they won’t make me cry or sway me, your secret is safe with me”.
“Why Can’t We” also includes second guitarist Jeff Ross, and the lyric “the way the stars above shine at night, the way the flowers open to the light…why can’t we”. “Second Chance”, “I see your face in every smile…I hear your voice in every word…at first your heart was open, I could tell from just your glance… I need a second chance”. “Gypsy Payback” is another narrative with background vocalists Tracy Hart, and Sheila Heard, “I walk into Times Square…I went to a fortune teller…she said you can have your money back, you got no future…it’s a gypsy payback”.
“Tall Guy Boogie” is an instrumental that reminds me of a Bo Diddley Boogie, while Dennis’ guitar solo reminds me of the iceman Albert Collins. The infectious “Thousandaire”, “I’m a thousandaire people…I ain’t no looking back…I’m a big shot entertainer…next stop millionaire”. On the closer “You Been Blackenized” the narrative and vocal are sung by Bobby Warren, ” a gun came out…a knife came out…you’ve been blackenized”.
All those experiences can be heard on this new album “Bluesman From Jupiter”, by Dennis Spencer Goddard. Ten original tracks that cover it all from the high times to the low, from boogie to the blues”.
