APM Records
Mississippi MacDonald is a Two-time winner of British Blues Award from London, England. He has been playing guitar since he was eleven years old and was influenced by what he heard in his parents record collection. He dreamed of going to Chicago and playing the clubs where Muddy Waters used to play. He has traveled extensively on the US blues trail, meeting Pinetop Perkins, Willie Big Eyes Smith, Otis Clay, and B. B. King. MacDonald adds “I like records by the Stones, Fleetwood Mac, and John Mayall, but when I was learning guitar those artists were rock”, and MacDonald preferred Albert Collins, the three Kings; B.B., Albert, and Freddie; and the soul-blues of O.V. Wright and Z.Z. Hill. MacDonald opens with “I Got What You Need” written by William Norris “I got it, what you need girl, satisfaction guaranteed”.
“We’re Gonna Make It” is a soul blues written by Gene Barge, R. Davis, Raymond Miner, and Carl Smith, and originally performed by Little Milton in 1965, “I got your love and you know you got mine…even when we’re on the welfare line. “Stop! Think About It”, is an original written by MacDonald “you said you love me child, are you walkin’ on me?”, producer Phil Dearing plays 2nd guitar on a telecaster. “3.35 AM” is an instrumental shuffle written by MacDonald. “Hard Luck and Trouble” was written by John Ward founder of the Memphis based Ecko Records, “blowin’ in, turns me around, and it blows back out again”. “Sinking” was written by producer Dearing who plays both guitar and keyboards while the tight rhythm section throughout the recording is Eliott Boughen, bass; and Jim Kimberley, drums “your blues eyes don’t mean nothing to me, the water is coming over the side and this boat is sinking now”, while Lucy Randall sings harmony.
“Soul City One” is a second original instrumenal from MacDonald with Dearing on the Hammond B-3. “If I Could Only Hear My Mother Pray” was written by JW Vaughan and James Rowe, and originally sung by Mahalia Jackson. On the closer “Your Dreams” Dearing plays piano while MacDonald plays guitar and sings emotionally, “I know I won’t stand on my own, and the dreams that we share…raise your hand in song and let me know”.
MacDonald released “Devil’s Chain” his debut album in 2014, This is his 6th album in his own name although several were released with The Soul Fixers. It is impossible to have too much music from Mississippi MacDonald.
