Michele Malone has been a mainstay of American roots music for more than thirty years, mixing roadhouse rock & roll with blues, folk and country-soul. Malone makes the greater Atlanta area her home, and her sound a southern Georgia roots sound. Malone released her debut album “New Experience” on Aluminium Jane Records in 1988. After more than a dozen studio albums Malone continues flying a flag for Georgia.
She opens with the title track, co-written with Gary Stier “I’m stuck here in New York City…I need a little ‘Southern Comfort’ if you please”, Charlie Starr and Doug Kees are the lead guitarists, while Rick Richards from The Georgia Satellites plays slide, and Paul Jackson sings the backing vocal. “Like Mother, Like Daughter”, and half of the albums songs, were co-written with Dean Dillon, “one day you finally realize that she told you so”, the ensemble again includes Charlie Starr on electric guitar, Jeff Spirko on fiddle, and a rhythm section that includes bassist Tom “Panda” Ryan, and drummer Mike Rizzi.
On “I Choke On My Words” Malone sounds wistful as she is joined by Randall Bramblett on Wurlitzer, Buddy Miller on guitar, and background vocalist Eliot Bronson. “Simple Life” “I’m just trying to do, the best I can”, followed by “Easter Sunday”; and “Believe” co-written with Bronson, “down on my knees…you always make me feel…I’ll see you again if I believe”. “Undercover Mother” is a rockin’ song from Malone “she gets up in the morning long before the rooster sings…she really gets around…she takes you downtown, she’s an undercover mother”.
“I Want To Be In That Picture” is a sentimental song, “there is mom and dad, I want to be in that picture…they were in love, may you always be together”. “Barbed Wire Kisses” is another rockin’ song from Malone “I tried to hurt you, the way you hurt me, barbed wire kisses…you spit in my face…your barbed wire kisses got to me”. “One Track Mind” has a sound similar to The Traveling Wilburys, “I got a one track mind, on you all the time, I got a one track mind…people think I’ll change but I got a one track mind, it’s on you all the time”. On the closer “Wine and Regret” written by Malone, she belts “so this is how it feels, when your heart gets full…I’ll always keep you close”.
Malone states “Southern Comfort” brings me full circle in a lot of ways, from the beginning of my career I’ve always had a foot in the southern-rock world, and a foot in the folk world. “Southern Comfort” really solidifies the stance and brings those sounds together”. A jubilation for sure.
